I love winter, it is a time to snuggle up in front of a cozy fire with a good book or maybe you still like to get outdoors even though it is cold. Of course the shorter days and cold mornings, make it difficult to get up and go!
Winter is also the season for cold and flu!
It is almost impossible to keep germ free especially as we are staying indoors with the central heating on or working in air conditioned offices.
I was inspired by Amino to write a post on how I stay healthy in winter and hopefully some of these tips will help you and your family enjoy a healthier winter!
The question we ask ourselves each year is:
‘What can you do for you and your family to help you keep healthy during the winter months?’
The answer is really common sense. We all know what we need to do it is just a matter of reminding ourselves and making sure that we follow a plan.
Here are my 6 top tips for staying healthy during winter
Yes, I know it is winter, however it is just as important to keep hydrated in winter as it is in summer. During summer we sweat which gives us the sign to drink more water. In winter we forget as we don’t feel as thirsty. In my post 4 reasons Why You Need to Keep Hydrated Summer or Winter I discuss the various ways you can become dehydrated no matter what time of year it is.
2. Supplement your diet with Vitamin D
With all the snuggling up inside during winter, coupled with the shorter days, our Vitamin D levels can become low due to lack of sunlight. To help boost your levels, try taking some Vitamin D supplements and also look at your diet to make sure you are including foods which contain this Vitamin such as fish, fish liver oil and egg yolks.
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, bone and muscle pain, it can affect immunity and may also increase the risk of heart disease. Try increasing your calcium levels by drinking milk and eating cheese.
It can be difficult to keep your exercise and fitness routine going in winter when a warm cosy bed is the place you want to be. However, keeping fit will help your immune system to fight the winter ills.
4. Good Hygiene
With so many germs being spread by coughs it is so important to try to keep good hygiene habits. Washing hands frequently, covering your mouth when you cough and trying to keep benchtops clean with disinfectant.
5. Rest & Recover
If you do catch a cold or flu, rest and recover. Don’t try to battle on and spread your germs by going out. Stay home, take it easy and drink lots of fluids. Your body is sending you the message that you need to rest so listen to it!
6. Be Proactive
Be Proactive and discuss your options with your doctor. You may be able to have a ‘flu shot’ which will help to lessen your chances of becoming sick.
