5 ways to a fit and fabulous new year

Okay it is a New Year and thoughts turn to making changes in our lives. We are bombarded through social media about the next ‘big’ thing to make us feel healthier and happier. Some things work and others don’t. We can be sucked into a false hope only to be shattered or disappointed because nothing seems to be working.

I’ve decided to make this year a Fit & Fabulous New Year. A year where I really look at my lifestyle and make those changes we all talk about – eating healthier, less alcohol, more exercise and most of all more happiness.

I’m finding lately that although I espouse to being fit and healthy, I’m doing well on the fitness side but maybe not so well on the fabulous side. Fabulous to me means feeling upbeat, a ‘spring in my step’ and just really feeling on top of everything. Most of all it means feeling happy within myself and looking forward to each day with enthusiasm for life.

I know that as we get older we probably say to ourselves ‘I’m over all of this, I’m not interested in exercise or eating well’ BUT we should be. I love the feeling of being fit and healthy in body and mind. LIFE IS BETTER because WE FEEL BETTER. It doesn’t have be to gruelling Bootcamp or starving ourselves – we can get results just by making lifestyle changes and being CONSISTENT.

It is easy to write these words and to encourage others to be this way. I’ve tried that with my Fab Fitters over at the #couchpotatotofabfit Facebook group and have received very positive feedback. The trouble is that sometimes I’m so busy giving my thoughts and advice to others that perhaps I’m not listening to myself. I’m not taking my own advice which is about being more relaxed and mindful about my life.

So in 2017 that is going to change!  My word for 2017 is ‘Simplify’ and that means we don’t have to be looking for the next big thing to make us healthy and happy.  It means taking a simple but consistent approach to all areas of our life.  Forget the crash diets, forget the gruelling workouts, forget the addiction to social media and the whirl of life.

WE CAN BE FIT & FABULOUS LIVING A SIMPLE LIFE – IT ALL COMES DOWN TO OURSELVES, WE HAVE THE POWER.

How am I going to change things? Well….

Here are my 5 ways to a Fit & Fabulous New Year

1. Stop talking and start doing

Yes, I’m good at giving advice and talking about ways to be fit & fabulous now I need to JUST DO IT! I’m putting into action what I truly believe are ways to be Fit & Fabulous and living by example. That means eating well, exercising each day and taking time out to rest my mind and removing the words ‘Fad Diet’ from my vocabulary.

It is all about making healthier food choices rather than starving ourselves.  Good nutrition makes us feel vital and alive.

2. Start each day with time for me

Instead of jumping out of bed and straight onto social media or my website, I’ll be starting the day with time for ME. That means,

  • some quiet time to prepare for the day and what I want to achieve
  • exercise – it may be yoga, a walk or a run or a workout with my PT. Something to get me moving for the day.

3. Plan & Set targets

I’m using my last few days of this year to put a plan into place and set some targets for myself. Nothing can be achieved if I don’t have a plan which will help to keep me on track.

4. Enlist the help of a buddy and become accountable

I’m enlisting a buddy system to help me keep accountable. I have my P.T. and Saturday Sisters running group to help motivate me plus the Fab Fitters.

5. Reward & love myself

If I’m putting in the hard work and getting results then little rewards along the way will certainly help. That might be a massage, a day spa, a new outfit – something that makes me feel extra special.

It is also so important to learn to love the person that you are.  Being a Body Image Movement Ambassador means being healthy and happy with who we are as a person first and foremost.

    Great tips. I would love to be fit and fabulous in 2017 Sue! My problem is not lack of motivation or time but I keep injuring myself each time I get serious about exercise. I have just endured a few weeks of constant lower back pain and sciatica. I’m due back at my Pilates class next week so fingers crossed my back will be up for it.

      Hi Kathy! Sorry to hear about your lower back pain. I can relate as I suffer from lower back pain and the only thing that keeps it on track is exercise with my PT and yoga.     This is the best Sue. I am joining a gym this weekend. One near my home. One that I will actually visit because of the convenience. I intend to set small attainable goals. Like go to the gym 2 times a week for 45 minutes. I can always up the number of days and/or the time, but the issue is just getting started. I am definitely looking for an affordable yoga class as well. I think yoga once a week will change my life. I used to attend yogo classes and I loved it. I also love palettes. But those classes are so expensive. Finally, I need to get up from the computer and take care of me. I am going to schedule my workout the same way I schedule any other important aspect of my life. I too need a lot of that, I have been asking people to get that ready and this ready but am not finding time to get to it. Now I think I will begin doing all those things I have been planning to.     I am in! For me it is all about feeling better. Looking better is a great bonus. As I lose weight, I am starting to love shopping and deserve some new clothes. It is a nice reward for the hard work.
