CHANGE can be difficult but also empowering. Sometimes we fear change but if we open our minds change can be wonderful and exciting. We usually don’t change unless we are forced to, however the winds of change blow through our life and sometimes we are swept up and carried along like a leaf.
We need to accept change but we also need to remember we can control the changes.
What will you change in the New Year?
Instead of making the usual New Year resolutions why not reflect on your life at the moment and really think about what you would like to change. You may think that life is perfect (lucky you!) and you don’t want to change but life is all about change and with change we grow.
Do you have a voice in your head saying ‘I don’t like this I need to change it?‘.
Before you can change you need to know what you want the outcome to be.Click To Tweet
Are you stuck in a rut of life and want to make changes but not sure how? Remember, it is never too late!
1. Acknowledge Your Fear of Change
Change can be frightening and overwhelming and our fear can be an obstacle to achieving the changes we want to make. Acknowledge this fear and accepting that change is not easy and with each tiny change you will overcome your fears.
2. Plan Your Changes
You can’t make changes if you don’t know what changes you want to make. You need to find a quiet spot and write down the changes you would like to make in your life. Categorise your changes into small, easy changes, and those that will take longer to achieve.
Once you know what you want to change you can plan to make those changes happen.
Change doesn’t happen immediately and it can take time. Keep checking in on your progress as you take each step further towards making the change complete.
3. Create a ‘Letting Go’ Jar
I recently saw this idea and thought it was wonderful. Grab a jar and label it ‘Letting Go’. As you find yourself dropping back into old habits and doing something you wanted to change, write it on the piece of paper and put it in the jar as a way of letting go of the past and starting anew.
As you put it in the jar say in your mind or aloud that you are letting go of the old way and making the change to your new life. This will reinforce in your mind that you can’t continue in the same way if you want change to happen.
At the end of the year you can look back on all the changes you have made in your life.
4. Health & Wellbeing
Regular exercise and a healthy diet will keep your mind and body active. Your motivation as you start to feel better will keep you going to make the changes you want to make. Enter an appointment in your diary for your exercise. You are more likely to stick to it if you have it planned.
5. Learn Something New
Enrol in a class, start a new hobby. Developing your mind will introduce you to new things and help you to grow and make the changes you are looking for in your life.
6. Dare to Dream
Dreaming about what we would like is healthy – although you need more than dreams to make it happen. Make a vision board of what you envisage the changes in our life to look like. You can do this on Pinterest or a cork board with pictures of what the changes represent.
7. Have a Tech Free Day
Step away from the computer and the i-phone and release your mind. Having a tech-free day is not only good for your eyesight it is good for you ‘mind-sight’.
Our minds are so cluttered and in information overload that we need to step away and relax. Spend time with our family or friends, read a book, go for a walk, meditate.
Clear your mind and you will discover the changes you are looking to make.
8. Make Time for ‘Me-Time’
I don’t know how many times I’ve written about ‘me time’ and how it is so important for us in maintaining our health and well-being. Even an hour a week makes such a difference if that is all you can manage. Ideally, take some time each day for you to do something just for you and to meditate on all the good things in your life.
9. Celebrate Your Changes
As you make the changes in your life – Celebrate the Change. It is not easy to make changes so you need to congratulate yourself and acknowledge your achievement. At the same time, don’t beat yourself up if you fall back into the old ways. Just start afresh and keep going – change doesn’t happen overnight.Keep going!
