Meaningful Mondays: The best thing about being a grandmother

Best thing about being a grandmother

This month I’m writing about Making May Your Month of Happiness  and what could bring more happiness to our lives than our grandchildren?

The best thing about being a grandmother apart from just having grandchildren is the joy they bring to our lives.

Although it is difficult to select one ‘best thing’ isn’t it?

This is the first of a two-part series.  Today I’m sharing my thoughts and in the next post, I’ve asked 6 other grandmothers what they feel is the best thing about being a grandmother.  I do hope you will look out for that one later this week.

Being with my grandson, Ethan makes me STOP and enjoy the moment rather than rushing through the day and missing out on so many simple but wonderful things in life.

I recently read on a Facebook post that a grandmother had lost her grandchildren because their parents divorced and the mother moved to another country. She has not had contact with them for quite some time.

This story pulled at my heart as I just don’t know what would happen to me if I couldn’t see my grandson, Ethan.  I have spent each Wednesday with him since he was born.  He brings such joy to my life and I feel like my heart could burst with the love I have for him.  I have enjoyed being a grandmother because I can share in his experiences of life as I have the time now.  My heart melts when I hear ‘Come on, Nan!’, as he shows me his next discovery.

Ethan has made me really stop and enjoy the moment and I am so grateful I have the time to be able to share this with him.  I love watching his development and also realise that being a grandparent means I am a role model for him which is a huge responsibility.  You might enjoy reading my post Are you a healthy role model for your children and grandchildren?

I’m a ‘Nan’ to my darling grandson Ethan who just turned 3 and ‘Nanna Sue’ to Lexie, Harry & Camden (grandchildren on my husband’s side).  We don’t see Lexie, Harry and Camden often but I make all of them a special birthday cake each year which they just love.  I love thinking up new ideas and although I’m not a professional. even I think the cakes look great because they are made with love.

grandmother quotes

In my next post, I ask 6 grandmother’s what is the best thing about being a grandmother.  Don’t miss it!

Are you a grandmother?  What is the best thing about being a grandmother for you?  I’d love you to leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Being a Nan is just the best thing isn’t it Sue? Unconditional, simple, uncomplicated and just pure bliss. You are so blessed to have Ethan every week and I know he will benefit immensely from his time with you.

I am a blogger over 60 and I have 8 grandchildren! They are such a joy to me and enrich my life in ways I never thought possible. It’s great to find another Aussie blogger who is also a grandmother! I’ve followed you on Instagram after I discovered the grandmother bloggers link party. I’m getting up the nerve to join as I’ve never blogged before and am really just getting my feet wet. Anyway so glad I found this group because it seems everyone is younger than I am until now!

Great minds think alike, Sue! I recently finished writing the post, “You Know You’re A Grandparent When….”. That post is set to publish in five hours from now.
I totally agree with your above sentiments on being a Grandparent. I greatly look forward to reading your upcoming post from six grandmothers.

Hi Donna I loved your post and yes it is lovely that we can share the same niche. There are many mummy bloggers out there which is nice but not always relevant to what I’m writing about. Have a great week!

Such joy! I had the privilege of becoming a grandmother without first being a mother–thanks to a later-in-life marriage to a man who had a grown son. We Skype and talk on the phone with Levi, and he’s started using email (my stepson, daughter-in-law and grandson live on the other side of the U.S., so we don’t get to see them too often). It’s been amazing to see him grow (he’s now eight).

They grow too quickly Roxanne! My husband’s daughter had two children so I was a step-grandmother to them for quite a while. Then my daughter had her son, Ethan and I thought my heart would burst. Skype and phone are great for long distance relationships aren’t they? You don’t have to miss out on seeing them grow and communicating regularly. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!

I think being a grand mom is such a great thing – you have the luxury of loving the grandkids without bothering too much about rules, which you can leave to the mums and dads. You make me want to become a grand mom. It’s still a long way off, though. #mg

Exactly – loving without the rules. Enjoy your children now as they grow so quickly but yes you will enjoy the next stage I’m sure. Have a beautiful Mother’s Day and thanks for stopping by.

I love that quote about falling in love. I know my mum feels the same with her grandchildren, she actually said to me the other day that they are the best gift she has ever been given in her life #mg
