How to be Positive for a More Meaningful Life

A Positive MindsetWe all experience stress, anxiety and depression at some point in our lives.  For some these feelings are only temporary but for others it goes deeper and requires the assistance of medical intervention.

In my post Why We All Need A Mental Health Day, I discuss how everyone needs to be able to feel they can take a day for themselves when they are feeling overwhelmed with life in general.

So how do we overcome stress and achieve a positive mindset?

Here are 8 Quick Ways to Improve Your Mindset

Nurture Yourself

  • Taking care of yourself and having ‘me’ time is important
  • Do something you enjoy
  • Take up a new hobby to stimulate your mind
  • Read a book
  • Take a holiday or mini break

Eat a healthy diet

  • Make healthier food choices to ensure you are eating nutritious meals.
  • Drink plenty of water.  Dehydration can make you feel lethargic and listless.

Ensure you get plenty of sleep

  • We all feel better after a good night’s sleep.  Problems don’t seem as overwhelming and we are able to cope better.
  • If you are having trouble sleeping try establishing a relaxing night time routine.
  • Leave technology at the bedroom door.

Exercise & Enjoy the Outdoors

  • Taking care of your physical fitness reduces stress and improves your mood.
  • Aim to exercise at least 5 times a week you don’t have to run a marathon.  Go for a walk, take a yoga class, swim or go to the gym.  Enjoy what you do and it won’t feel like a chore.
  • Spend time in the sunshine
  • Enjoy and appreciate nature. Take a bushwalk. A walk by the river or along the beach.
  • Sit and appreciate a sunrise or sunset

Learn relaxation techniques

  • If you are feeling stressed or anxious, close your eyes and take three slow deep breaths
  • Have a soothing massage
  • Listen to music
  • Take a yoga class

Be Social

  • Catch up with family and friends. If you are feeling depressed or stressed it helps to surround yourself with people who care.
  • Join a class or an activity where you can meet new people

Learn to Say ‘NO’ to Find Balance

  • Learning to say ‘NO’ is one of the hardest things and over-committing ourselves to please others can place undue pressure on us.
  • Realise you can’t be everything to everyone and you need to try to find balance in your life.

Ask for help

  • Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help.  People often feel they are weak if they ask for help but taking that step and acknowledging you need help is very courageous.
  • If you are finding it difficult to ‘snap out’ of this feeling of being overwhelmed, anxious or stressed, seek medical help.

Great tips…Thanks for sharing and reminding me to take time to take care of myself. You are right! The hardest thing for me is to learn to say “NO”. #mg

I think most women in particular have trouble saying ‘NO’ I still have to work on it but I’m improving I think. Thank you so much for stopping by to comment and have a lovely day!

Thank you Cheryl for stopping by to comment. I’ve had some sadness in October which made me really reflect on life. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes something sad to happen to us to make us stop and think. Have a lovely week and stop by anytime 🙂

I’ve always felt like I was selfish putting ‘me time’ into action, until I burnt out last year, now I know it’s a MUST! Some great advice honey! I love being social now more than ever too xx Thanks for sharing with me #mg

We are all taught to put others first so it can be very difficult to realise that if we are selfish sometimes and nurture ourselves we are really being better for those that we love. Thanks for the opportunity to linkup at #mg. Have a great day!

it’s always good to have a reminder to slow down a little and smell the roses. A bit of “me” time here and there goes a long way towards making life smoother and happier (both favourites of mine!)

I’m always going at 100km/hour Leanne but over the last few months with personal experiences I have realised that life is short. Sure I want to go for it all but I also want to slow down for a moment and take stock of what I have, who I am and how lucky I am. Thanks for your support and comments Leanne really appreciate it.

Wonderful reminders. I read a report recently on people in their 90’s and they concluded that having purpose in their everyday lives was even more helpful than diet. I am sure that did not mean that diet was not important thought.

Agree Kathleen, I believe you do need a reason to get up every morning. Yes having a good diet helps but I know plenty of people who live long lives and their diets aren’t great. It is how invested you want to be in living life that is important. Thanks for stopping by to comment and have a lovely day.

Sue, this is so timely for me. I need to make sure I do all these things. I get too stressed if I don’t. I really need to make sure I eat, and that I eat quality food, sleep is elusive-I need to work on getting more of it, I take a long hot bath each night which helps relax me, but also soothes my legs. I’m not much of a meditater, but I spend a lot of time praying and giving thanks, which really helps! I need to work on some of my other areas and your tips will help. Thank you. xx

I would love a bath Nikki and I’m happy to say our new home which we will retire to has one! We all need to give thanks each day for all that we have and then that can start a bubble of happiness inside. Have a lovely day beautiful lady!
