Simple Ways to Rejuvenate Yourself #10 – Try something new

The final chapter in my Simple Ways to Rejuvenate Yourself is #10 – Try something new!  Trying something new and even challenging yourself makes you feel alive. We can all fall into the routine of day-to-day life, the same old, same old and life can become BORING!  We become BORING and we stop trying.

Once we stop trying we fall into a rut and the negativity starts to infilitrate our lives. We become negative and dissatisfied with our ‘lot in life’.  We stop making an effort with our appearance, our work and our relationships.  In fact we JUST STOP TRYING!

The best way to pull yourself out of this state is to TRY SOMETHING NEW! challenge yourself

Is there something you have always wanted to do but haven’t made the time to do it?

A friend of mine, Chris,  who is Sizzling After Sixty, recently fulfilled a dream.  Her dream was to visit Scotland and climb Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the Bristish Isles.

ben nevis

She spent months training for the climb as she hadn’t done anything like this before.  Months of walking and building her fitness.  As the time came closer to the trip I could see and feel the excitement building in her.

Yes, it was a challenge to her fitness and mindset but the feeling of success when she reached the top was priceless.

I’m not suggesting you climb a mountain BUT I am suggesting you think about something you would like to do, which you have never done before and work towards achieving it.

I’ve been trying to learn Italian over the last few years but I am sporadic in my study.  I would love to be able to visit my husband’s family in Italy and speak to them in their own tongue – I am great a gestures though – almost like an Italian!  Although I haven’t really made it a priority, I enjoy challenging my mind to speak in a different language – it keeps me healthy!

Carol Cassara, a new friend, writes a blog, (I am a fan of hers), recently wrote about her experience ‘Fly-Fishing’.  This was something she never thought she would do but gave it a go and loved it.  You can read her thoughts here The Zen of Fly-Fishing.

Maybe it is as simple as changing your hairstyle or fashion style. We all feel great with a new style.  Take a leap and try something completely different you may be pleasantly surprised.  Cut your hair short, try new colours in your wardrobe.  Consult a stylist to help you.

Trying something new can be such a positive experience because You:

  • discover so much about yourself and your ability.
  • realise that you can embrace change and experience new things.
  • learn and keep your brain active.
  • open your mind to new possibilities
  • develop self-confidence
  • actually feel excited, and maybe even nervous but one thing – you will feel is ALIVE!

I would love you to read one of my earlier blogs about running my first full marathon at 55. At 50 I  started running so aiming for a full marathon was a challenge but the feeling of elation when I completed it was exhilirating.  I learned so much from that experience about myself. You can read by clicking on the link:  How Running a Marathon Taught Me Anything is Possible

Have you recently tried something new?  I’d love to hear about your experience.

I agree it’s always good to try new things and step out of your comfort zone. I can’t imagine ever climbing a mountain like that, though, and give her tons of credit! What a huge accomplishment!

I know Lois I think she is fantastic and a true inspiration to me. I’m not sure about a mountain either but there are many ways to step out of our comfort zone, so I’m sure we can find something!

My pleasure Ellen! It is not easy finding the time but if we make the time and try something new it really does put a spring back into our step. x

I couldn’t either Helene but I certainly surprised myself! I think it helped because I worked with younger girls who didn’t see me as older than them LOL:) they just said I could do it and off we went!

I’m a big fan of trying something new to keep you fresh – I’m having thoughts about learning guitar (I have NO musical ability and can’t read music or anything) I might start with learning what musical notes mean – I’m sure I can google it!

Oh that is a great idea Leanne. I’ve often thought about going back to the piano which I haven’t played for years and also taking up ballroom dancing. There is so much we can do we just have to find the time!

That’s amazing what she did. So impressive. Yes, I believe every once in awhile you need to shake out the tedium in your life and try something new, whether it’s a class, mastering a skill, going on vacation somewhere different or taking a risk.

Chris is amazing Estelle. Of course, we don’t all have to climb mountains. There are so many new things we can try or learn. As you say mastering a skill or taking a class or even travel. Thanks for stopping by and have a lovely day!

Yes travel whether at home or overseas opens our eyes to so many new experiences Rebecca. Some people don’t even know what is in their own backyard and sometimes it is good just to take a look around where you live and explore. Have a fabulous day!
