Start Each Day with a Grateful Heart

Grateful HeartI was having my usual dilemma selecting a topic to write about when I glanced at the quote of the day on my notebook.  It suggested we “Start each day with a Grateful Heart”.  This made me stop and think – “Do I do that each day?”.   If I’m honest with myself the answer is ‘No’.  Like everyone, I get so caught up in my life and problems that I forget to be grateful for the wonderful things I have.

I have a friend who is a beautiful soul.  In her 80’s she is lively, happy and has many friends who adore her.  You just can’t call around and say hello without her compelling you to stay for a meal.  This lady loves life and is a great role model for us all.

Recently, she was diagnosed with cancer.  The diagnosis was not expected and the news has been devastating.  We are all at a loss and cannot believe it is happening to such a wonderful person.  However, her attitude is one of making the most of her life and not sitting around, giving up and waiting to die.  She is setting a wonderful example of being grateful for every day that she has left.

gratefulnessIt is hard not to feel sorry for ourselves or think our worries and problems are bigger than others, however when something like this happens it makes us realize that we have little to complain about.

Take a moment to step back and think “What am I grateful for”?  I know that you are thinking, ‘what a cliche I’ve heard this all before’ BUT HAVE YOU REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT IT?

I am grateful for:

1.  My wonderful husband who loves me unconditionally and with whom I share wonderful experiences.

2.  My gorgeous family and friends who makes me feel special and loved

3.  Spending time with my grandson who teaches me how to be a child again and appreciate the small things in life that we take for granted.  We lay on our backs on the grass and look up at a perfectly blue sky.  Such a simple thing but a special time shared together.

4.  My good health which allows me to enjoy running with my “Saturday Sisters’ and lead an active and fit lifestyle.

5.  My drive – I am a driven person who wants to achieve, learn and grow.  From this I have been fortunate to use this drive to work hard and gain financial independence.

6.  My experiences through travel – I have been so fortunate to travel to many interesting places and learn from these experiences.  Through travel I learn to appreciate what I have and learn about how other people live.  I learn how it changes me.

7.  My freedom – I live in a wonderful country, Australia, where freedom is a way of life and sometimes taken for granted.  We are free to live our lives the way we want, to have education and the opportunities in life that many in other countries will never have.

8.  My bed – at the end of the day I love laying down in my bed and in winter snuggling under the covers.  I think often when I do this about those homeless people who are sleeping in the elements on the ground.

9.  My ability to use technology – yes I know technology has taken over our lives but I am grateful that I have kept up to speed with these changes.  My parents-in-law don’t even have an ATM card, have no idea of mobile phones and think that computers are some form of magic.  They can’t comprehend that we talk to their relatives in Italy through Facebook.

10.  BUT MOST OF ALL – I AM GRATEFUL FOR LIFE!  It is so easy to not think about this until something happens and you realize that life is limited and we need to make the most of it.  Of course, I am grateful for the material things I have in my life – who wouldn’t be if they are honest – however the simple pleasures of life and the love and support of partner, family and friends should be cherished and treasured.

I’m going to make a copy of this and post it on my mirror so that I see it every day and am reminded how lucky I am.

      Thank you Michelle for your comment. It really strikes home when someone the same age becomes ill (or worse) we face our mortality then. It is hard not to take things for granted however if we remind each other that helps. I’m having a wonderful weekend – just returned from brunch and a stroll through the markets with my husband.

    Sue, I am so sorry about your friend. She sounds like a wonderful lady.
    This post is lovely. You are right; it is so easy to ‘forget to remember,’ and these are things we should remember every day! I have lived in and visited other countries where freedom and basic living essentials were largely non-existent. I promised myself I would never take them for granted again. Sadly, I often break that promise to myself. Thank you for this beautiful reminder!

      Yes it is such a shame however on a positive note she was able to attend her granddaughter’s wedding last weekend which we didn’t think would happen. She is strong so won’t give in too easily. As far as being grateful we all forget to be this way because we are so busy. As long as we think about our blessings more often than not.     I am sorry to hear about your friend Sue, but I understand her attitude, and laud her effort to keep enjoying life for whatever time is left. We are not guaranteed time, and need to spend every day as though it will be our last. Unfortunately we so often get caught up in trivial things. Your list is marvelous, and brings home the truth. Thanks for sharing it. For me, #10 says it all.

    Gosh it’s moments like this that really make us think, isn’t it. I admire people who can handle things such as a cancer diagnosis with the same beautiful attitude they have lived their lives with.
