12 tips to improve your health and wellness

This month on the blog it has all been about my Month of Health & Wellness.  I’ve been making a concerted effort to take care of my myself – body, mind and soul.  To me looking after the three areas of body, mind and soul brings a holistic and total health and wellness.

I like to think I lead a healthy and active life but we can all fall off track or have times when we just aren’t feeling fit or fabulous.  On those days we need a quick ‘pick-me-up’ to get us going again so I gave some thought and came up with some quick and easy ways to improve our health and wellness.

The idea is that they are easy and don’t require much thinking or effort – but you will feel better and that is the aim.

12 ways to improve health and wellness

1. Get back to nature

Take a walk through the bush or along the beach. Getting outside into the fresh air and being surrounded by nature is good for your soul.  Actually stop and listen.  Breathe deeply and slowly.  Research shows that connecting with nature can improve our health and increase our happiness.

2. Yoga

I only discovered yoga about 18 months ago but is has so many health benefits and I feel less stressed and my body feels wonderful after a session.  You might like to read my post Fit & Fabulous : Yoga does not have an age limit – 5 benefits of Yoga

3. Drink more water

Most of us don’t drink enough water and it is vital for good health.  You might like to read a previous post 28 Day Challenge – Drink to Water.

4. Move

Walk, dance, run, swim, go for a bike ride, yoga, pilates, stretch – whatever you enjoy.  Moving not only gets our bodies going but our minds become more alert and less stressed.

5. Listen to some favourite music

What is your favourite music?  Is it soothing classical or upbeat that gets you singing and moving  Listening to music can be so uplifting, relaxing and improves our mood.

6. Take a leisurely bath

I love luxuriating in a bubble bath.  Light some scented candles, put on some soft music and just let the warm water soothe away the troubles of the day.

7. Catch up with a friend

Grab a friend and have a catch up.  Better still go for a brisk walk together and have a coffee catch up at the end.  Connecting with others is important for good mental health and wellbeing.  So phone a friend now and arrange a time.  You might like to read my post, Midlife Mental Health: Staying connected for good mental health

8. Read a book or watch a movie

I love idling away a few hours getting lost in a book or watching a movie.  Leaving reality for a couple of hours helps us to relax and feel less stressed or anxious.

9. Have an early night

Burning the candle at both ends?  Feeling tired and not energetic?  Then make the effort to have an early night.  A good night’s sleep helps to renew your body and relaxes your mind and soul.  You will feel refreshed and ready to take on the day.

10. Prepare and enjoy a delicious healthy meal

Too often we rush the preparation and eating of a meal.  Take some time to select and prepare a healthy recipe.  Something with lots of flavour and bursting with colour.  Be mindful when you are eating and enjoy the flavours, savouring the moment.  Don’t feel like cooking, make a healthy smoothy with your favourite vegetables – quick, easy and nutritious.

11. Switch off from technology

We are surrounded and bombarded by technology.  Smartphones, social media, television have invaded our space and unfortunately I’m guilty of getting caught up in it all.  Some days we need to switch off from technology and give our minds time to clear the clutter.  It isn’t easy but I try to switch off one day per week and I can tell you the world won’t end and your friends on social media will still be there.

12. Be Grateful

Making time to give thanks is an important part of total well being.  Life can take over and we don’t always appreciate the goodness in our lives.  I started a morning ritual of giving thanks each morning.  Some people do this before bed, some write in a journal.  No matter how you do it the act of being grateful will fill your soul with joy.

Okay, those are my top 12 ways to improve health and wellness.

All very good tips, Sue! Thanks for sharing…In the morning, I ask myself two questions: 1) How do I want to feel at the end of the day? and 2) What will make me feel that way? The answers guide my activities for the day.

They are two excellent questions Natalie and would certainly put you in the right frame of mind to face the day. Have a beautiful day and hope you visit again. x

Love this. Especially the part about yoga. I’ve done all different kinds of yoga on and off for 10+ years now and I know that I always feel better and more at peace with myself when I’m doing it regularly. It’s great for your physical health, but I run or lift weights for that. I much prefer to do it to develop mindfulness and be in touch with myself. It’s amazing how much 20 minutes of moving pose to pose with purposeful breath can bring you back to yourself.

Hi Jennifer! I love yoga but only came to it about a year or so ago. Like you I run and do PT sessions so I enjoy the strength in mind and body that yoga gives me. I can now finally clear my mind and concentrate on my breathing. I always feel so warm and comforted after a session. Thanks for stopping by and I’m off to check out your website.
