Be a healthy role model

In Meaningful Mondays this week I discussed the importance of being a role model.  We are all role models and don’t need celebrity to make a difference in other’s lives.

My question today is:

Are you a healthy role model for your children and grandchildren?

I DON’T MEAN you have to be running marathons, exercising non-stop or never eating anything more than a lettuce leaf.

I DO MEAN that you should be taking care of your health and well being not just for yourself but also for your family.  They take their cues from you and how you live your life.

How can you be a healthy role model?

Be a role model to your children and grandchildren.

Regular Exercise

  • 3 – 4 times a week exercise for at least 30 minutes.
  • Play with your children or grandchildren at the park – kick a ball with them, play hide and seek.  Keep moving!

Eating a well balanced diet

  • Treats are fine occasionally but good health and well being mean eating a well balanced diet.
  • Encourage your children or grandchildren in the kitchen by showing them how to make ‘healthier treats’.  They will learn the importance of healthier food options PLUS what a lovely way to spend time together.

Taking time to nourish your soul

  • Make time to do something YOU enjoy and teach others the importance of ‘ME’ time
  • Your happiness will shine through and be a positive influence on your children and grandchildren.

Making your mental health and wellness a priority

  • Leaning to say ‘no’ a little more often.
  • Making time each day to sit quietly and think about all the goodness in your life.
  • Teach your children and grandchildren the benefits of slowing down and appreciating the moment.

Do you need to make any changes to your health and well being?  Remember it isn’t just for your benefit….your family are learning from you.

    I think I pretty much tick all of these boxes, except I do indulge in a few glasses of wine each night. Both of my children are very health conscious and exercise regularly and eat very healthy. So it is nice to see that my good habits have rubbed off on them. However my daughter tends to disapprove on some of the things I eat, like flavoured yoghurts and sour dough bread. She thinks these are unhealthy and I agree to a certain extent but tell her I could be eating worse things like cakes and sweets! 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

      I knew you would be fine Kathy! Kids are funny aren’t they because they think they know it all. They don’t realise sometimes that moderation is the key to a happy and well balanced life. A few glasses of wine are okay – especially if they are red. To me a healthy lifestyle is all about balance – regular exercise, balanced eating including some treats and finding ways to be happy. Easy isn’t it? LOL:)

    Awesome post Sue! Our kids and grandchildren pick up so many of our habits that they may as well pick up good ones right? Or at least have an example of a balanced lifestyle to look at. And you’re so spot on with your “I don’t mean” and ” I do mean”. You don’t have to go to the nth degree, just make a few small changes. #TeamLovinLife

      Hi Kat! Yes too many people get caught up in taking things to the extreme and then life is a chore not an enjoyment. I think we also have to be very mindful of the eating messages we send – don’t eat the wrong foods but eat a well balanced diet. Body image is such an important issue and once you start using the word diet everyone thinks they have to live on air! Have a great day and thanks for stopping by x

    Yes, it is important to set a good example and although I don’t have grandies yet, I’m in practice! Like Kathy my biggest downfall is a glass of wine or two at night, but maybe not having them would mean I would be stressed or anxious – and perhaps that could end up worse for my health! LOL! #teamlovinlife

    My biggest battle is my sweet tooth. Luckily neither Mr 22 or Miss 20 have inherited that tendency. Mind you I wish Mr 22 wouldn’t eat so much fast food (despite the fact I have a decent meal on the table every night!)

    I definitely agree Sue. It’s important to set a good example for your family. I have a pretty healthy diet and I exercise almost every day. I talk to my kids about healthy eating, rather than eating to be thin or fad diets. I’m a Weight Watchers coach too, so I have to practice what I preach. #TeamLovinLife

    I am actually the health role model in our family.
    My parents are also amazing role models from a fitness point of view. They walk everywhere and their holidays are all adventures. Last year the followed the migration of the wildebeest in Africa. This year they are taking us to an eco village in Thailand.

    I love that you include spiritual and mental health in amongst this Sue – it’s so important to model a balanced and “at peace with yourself and the world” approach to our children and grandchildren. I really wish I’d had that as a role model – it would have made life a lot easier!

      I’m holistic when it comes to health and wellbeing Leanne. So that includes mind, body and spirit. You are right about being ‘at peace with your world’ it does make you a better person.

    Oh I wish my grandkids were close enough for me to influence, but still, they all seem to be eating fairly well. Exercise isn’t high on any of their agendas though.

    Last year my granddaughter told me that I was too fat and that she was worried that I wouldn’t live until I was 100 (our goal). She was 9. It was a wake up; first that she wanted me around that long and second that she worried about me.. I wasn’t fat but I was overweight. I started a weight-lost exercise regime the next day. Over the last year I’ve lost 25 pounds and counting and am as strong as an ox. God willing and the creek don’t rise, my granddaughter and I will celebrate several more decades of birthdays.

    I don’t have any grandchildren yet but I do try and be a healthy role model for my children (all adults now). I’ve always cooked up healthy meals, always done exercise and since walking away from my corporate job I now focus a lot more of getting a good balance to ensure better mental health. I’ve taken on board the practice of gratitude, mindfulness, meditation for example. I’ve developed a love of photography and writing. I enjoy nature and walking. I hope that these things set a good example for my kidults! #TeamLovinLife

    My caring for grandchildren each week WAS my fitness and my way of having wonderful meaning in my life. I also did my best to share family stories with them, engage them in cooking and fun as well as craft and art. I believe by doing this I was making many memories for them AND me. It is sad that it is over as they have all moved into school and out of school to Uni etc but for at least 3 days a week (combined with some part time teaching) it was what I did for LOVE.

      Oh you sounded really busy Denyse and I agree my fitness helps because I have my grandson that I care for each week. You have obviously been a great role model sharing family stories which will be important later in life and also encouraging them to be active in cooking and craft. They are lucky to have you x

    Sadly, my answer is no. I am not a good role model. I know this must change. I was a pretty good role model for years but I lost all my motivation about a year and a half ago and haven’t been able to get it back.

    I do my best to be a good role model of health and fitness for my grandchildren, and they have noticed. Sometimes they ask me questions about the things I do, like exercising. I especially love it when they want to join in. For the last two years, one of my granddaughters and I have been running buddies in the Girls on the Run program. We’re having the time of our lives!
