Best Birthday Ever

Best Birthday Ever

What has been your Best Birthday Ever?

This week’s prompt from  Denyse Whelan Blogs was simply – ‘Best Birthday Ever’.  Now immediately, I thought of my last birthday, but then I looked back over my life and found that there were several birthdays which could have been rated as ‘the best’.

Contender No 1

There was my birthday in primary school, alas I don’t have any photos.  My birthday was on the 23rd and a friend had hers on the 24th.  That year we had a combined birthday and our Mums hired a hall and we invited every kid in the class!  What brave Mums to host a party for 30+ children who all came!

Contender No 2

Skip forward to my 40th birthday.  My (now) husband and I had been living together for 5 years. I thought he might be proposing on my 40th birthday so I awoke pretty excited. As usual he spoilt me with gifts and the last one was a ring box.  Yes! An engagement ring! – Wrong!  It was a lovely dress ring but of course not the one I was expecting.

He explained that we would be going into the City for lunch and staying the night before coming home for a family BBQ on the Sunday.  I swept aside any disappointment and had a lovely afternoon. Just before dinner over drinks, he said he had one more gift.  He handed me a box – similar to what a coffee cup might be packed in.  It was then after opening the three boxes inside that I found the engagement ring.  He proposed and explained he had designed the ring himself – which was a year in the making!  Now that was a great birthday!

Best birthday ever

Contender No 3

Skip forward another 10 years to my 50th birthday. As my daughter and her partner were overseas for a year, I didn’t really want a huge party, although I definitely was not frightened of turning 50!  I worked in a small office and one of the girls (who had been my surrogate daughter, whilst Rachel was overseas) insisted on organising a soiree for me.  It would be just drinks with a few close friends – an intimate affair.

Rachel had sent me an email saying how sorry she was that should couldn’t be here to organise my birthday.  I assured her I was living my dream through her travelling and exploring Europe and living in London.

Why is my 50th birthday a contender?  On the day of my party, I was sitting in the office and the receptionist said I had a ‘client’ who wanted to see me in Meeting Room 1.  I wasn’t expecting anyone but when I opened the door there was my darling Rachel and her partner Ian.  They had always planned to come back and surprise me for my birthday.  After almost a year of just phone calls and skyping here was my daughter surprising me.  Tears certainly flowed and there were lots of hugs and celebrations.

Contender No 4

Skip forward another 10 years to my 60th birthday this year. My special birthdays seem to happen every 10 years!  My 60th birthday was so special because my darling husband, Mike and daughter, Rachel planned the perfect party Plus I had a 5 week overseas holiday to Spain and Italy, including a cruise around the Mediterranean.  I’ve written about my 60th birthday celebrations which you can read here.

My Best Birthday Ever?

All I know is that I am one lucky lady who has a husband and family who love me so much and I’m so grateful for all that I have.  My Mum passed away 30 odd years ago but she always showed her love for me and I will cherish the times we had together.

Well, I’m really torn as to which has been my best birthday ever.  I’ll leave it to you to judge and let me know in the comments below.   Also let me know your Best Birthday Ever and if you are a blogger why not write about it.

What a lovely post Sue! I like how you’ve explained your reasons for each ‘contender’ and how much fun you’ve had on your special birthdays. I had a similar surprise for my 50th and might even write about it, now that you’ve reminded me.

Hi Deb, at first I immediately thought of my 60th and then as I was writing the other 3 birthdays came to mind and I remembered how special they were. It was a good lesson in looking back further than a year or so and seeing how lucky I am. Have a fabulous week and it is great to have you back although I’ve loved your photos as well. xx

How fabulous that your best birthdays have been in what is probably the second half of your life! And not the birthdays of childhood parties with cake and ice cream. When I read this prompt from Denyse, I stopped to think about my best birthday ever. I don’t really remember my birthdays at all! Wasn’t sure what to write so didn’t!

While all of your birthdays were fabulous, I enjoyed reading about your 60th as it was taking place because I felt I knew you somehow, even though we have never met. What a celebration it was!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 27, 2017 at 08:59

Yes I’ve been very lucky Leslie and really I still don’t have a winner in my mind. I agree with you about my 60th as that is the most recent and most of my readers would have read about my celebrations. Have a great week, my friend, and looking forward to the mini link up. x

Thanks so much Mackenzie! When I first saw the prompt I immediately thought of my 60th but as you can see I’ve had several birthdays that have been extra special. Have a lovely day my friend and it is great to hear from you xxx

Oh Sue, this was such a beautiful post. The lovely memories of your mum and when your daughter and her partner came to visit you and also of your husband’s part in your special birthdays.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 28, 2017 at 08:25

I hadn’t reflected on past birthdays for ages SSG so it was lovely to remind myself how fortunate I have been in my life and that I am surrounded by some pretty special people. I miss my Mum even 30 odd years later because she was a very special person to everyone. Have a great week! xxx

This is a fabulous post to highlight the importance of birthdays. Birthdays are a perfect opportunity to show the people in our lives just how important they are to us. Your birthday celebrations confirm that you are surrounded by family and friends who adore and deeply appreciate you! 🙂

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 28, 2017 at 08:24

Yes Donna! I always try to make birthdays special for everyone, especially the grandchildren. I make them a special birthday cake each year. It is lovely also to be appreciated and shown love on your own special day as well. x

I got teary reading about your 50th Sue – to have a daughter who was prepared to fly all the way home for your big day is such an amazing blessing – and shows what a great job you did as a parent. The 60th was pretty spectacular too and well deserved. I loved this post and I wish you many more decades of birthdays to enjoy!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 28, 2017 at 08:23

Oh Leanne, it was pretty emotional as you can expect. I walked in and saw Rachel and Ian but it didn’t register for a moment who they were. Then suddenly we were hugging and crying. It was a very special time in my life. I’m very fortunate to have had these times and I hadn’t thought about them for a while. This prompt was a good way to remind me of my special family. xx

You’ve had some awesome birthdays – I can’t decide which is the best but it would be out of your 40th, 50th and 60th! My best is definitely my 50th earlier this year, which we celebrated with a magical and relaxing week in Balie.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 28, 2017 at 08:22

Yes I’ve been very fortunate Janet. Your 50th sounds like it was pretty special too!

  • Reply Jenni | Unclutter Your Universe November 27, 2017 at 19:34

wow what are your family going to pull out of the bag for the next big milestone birthday. The last three have been amazing and would take something spectacular to beat those.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 28, 2017 at 08:20

Would you believe I hadn’t even thought about that when I wrote the post Jenni?? I think I’ll enjoy the next decade and then see what happens. Thanks for stopping by and have a lovely day.x

  • Reply Kerrie November 28, 2017 at 20:57

I love all your memories of your birthdays… but I especially loved the 40th celebration. What a sneaky trick to play with the rings from your husband!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 29, 2017 at 05:52

Yes he certainly surprised me Kerrie that is for sure! Thanks for stopping by to comment and have a lovely day xx

Hi Sue! I loved this post! For me,…the answer is easy. My best birthday ever was my 40th. It was my last birthday with my Mom, as she passed away after an illness about 2 weeks later. I’ll always remember how, even though she was really sick, she got all dressed up for my birthday. I was at my parents’ house and we invited several neighbors, friends, and my Mom’s nurses over for a little party. I ordered 2 Ben and Jerry ice cream cakes because I always love left over ice cream cake. My Mom looked beautiful and so stylish as always. She stayed on the couch during the party, but she was in her faux leather pants looking incredible. That was my most memorable birthday ever and I cherish it completely.

Oh Gigi you have brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful birthday and memory you can treasure. Your Mum sounds like a very special lady and it was wonderful that you were able to celebrate with her even though she wasn’t well. Cherish this memory Gigi it is truly beautiful. Have a lovely weekend, my friend xx

Thank you so much Sue— Your post brought back good memories—

  • Reply Christie Hawkes December 1, 2017 at 23:22

What a fun post Sue. As I was reading it, I definitely thought I would choose your 40th birthday as the best ever, but then I read 50, and of course 60–who wouldn’t want to travel around Europe? So I’ll be no help in narrowing down your contenders. Isn’t it great that you really don’t have to choose one? One of my best birthdays was when I turned 50. My husband and I went to France. I had wanted to go since I started taking French class in junior high school. It was truly a dream come true! Thanks for bringing up that lovely memory.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric December 2, 2017 at 06:58

What a lovely birthday celebration for your 50th Christie! I’m sure that was so special as you had wanted to visit France for such a long time. I really can’t decide which was my favourite as they all hold special memories for me. I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by such love. Have a beautiful weekend and thanks for stopping by to leave me a comment. x

You have such a great list of best birthdays ever! I am looking forward to my birthdays getting better and better after reading your list! I think my 30th birthday party was my best birthday. There was a surprise party for me with all my family. Enjoy your weekend and keep writing your great posts!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric December 2, 2017 at 06:18

Perhaps birthdays get better when we get older, Natalie, because we appreciate them more. Your 30th sounds like it was a lovely celebration of you and a way for your family to show how much they love you. Your last sentence has made my day! There are times when I question whether I should keep going with the blog or not and then someone gives me an encouraging comment and I feel encouraged. Have a beautiful weekend. I’m off for a champagne breakfast with my running friends. x

I hope you have many more special ones.

I don’t know if I can even remember my best birthday. I also spent one in Italy and on a Mediterranean cruise. That one was pretty awesome for sure!

wow it sounds like you have had some fantastic birthdays! I love that he kept you in suspense with the multiple ring boxes and the ring is so lovely. You have some really thoughtful people in your life and I can see why you are struggling to choose! My birthdays are always a bit disastrous so I don’t think I will write about them haha

    • Reply Sue Loncaric December 5, 2017 at 09:41

I’m very lucky Charlotte but it wasn’t until I starting writing for the prompt that I realised just how spoilt I have been for my birthdays. Have a lovely week and thanks for stopping by x

  • Reply Michele December 5, 2017 at 12:30

Your engagement story was my favorite! It sounds like you have had a lot of great birthdays. My best birthday was a small impromptu gathering of some of my family a month or so after we had moved into our new home. Because it was last minute, there was no time to stress. I felt free and happy.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric December 7, 2017 at 09:43

Yes it was a lovely surprise Michele. Sometimes the impromptu is the best as everyone is in the mood and it is more about the memories than what food or drink is available etc. Feeling free and happy now that is the way we should feel all the time. x

Sue, I love this post and how special your family makes you feel! That is the best! I can’t decide which birthday I thought was the best. The proposal on the 40th was great, your daughter’s surprise visit on your 50th was so sweet, but what a 60th! I like to say one of my favorite things about motherhood is being able to say, “This age is my favorite!” — I think you can say the same thing about your birthdays!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric December 7, 2017 at 09:46

I’m very, very lucky Wendy.I love your saying and yes I could say the same about my birthdays. x
