Creating a self-care plan for life

The end of another year is fast approaching and we will be looking to a New Year and the usual resolutions. I stopped making Resolutions because for many of us our good intentions last a month, if we are lucky, and then fall by the wayside.  I decided to make a Life Plan that could be adjusted when I needed it to be but would be a long term WIP for a healthier and happier lifestyle.

I’ve been linking up with Natalie & Leslie each month for Wellness Wednesday.  Each month we have a prompt based around Health & Wellness and the last post for the year, is all about self-care.

Self-care, which is basically looking after and nurturing ourselves, has been quite a popular topic lately and many articles have been written about the importance of self care. Day 11 in my #25daycountdowntoahappychristmas was about taking the time to pamper ourselves.

That is fine for a day but….

How do we keep the momentum going and create a self-care plan not just for a month but for life?

Why do we need a self-care plan?

I came across a post which actually advised creating a self-care plan. History has shown that women have always been care-givers and usually put themselves last. This can be detrimental not only to our health but also our relationships.

Who wants to hang out with someone who is tired and irritable because they are always giving and not making time for themselves?

It’s time to create a self-care plan for life

There are a couple of things we need to remember when creating our self-care plan for life.

  1.  Life has a habit of getting in the way so don’t give up if you plans are interrupted.
  2.  Each of us is different and we are all individuals.  Therefore, one self-care plan will not fit all.  We need to create a self-care plan that will be suitable for ourselves.

6 areas of self-care to consider

The article I read details six areas of self-care activities that need to be addressed:

  • Workplace or Professional – ways to keep your work standard at an acceptable level
  • Physical – ways to keep your body and mind healthy and fit to provide energy for work and play
  • Psychological – ways to rest, relax and recover to keep good mental health and clarity
  • Emotional – Being able to experience your full range of emotions
  • Spiritual – taking the time to step out of day-to-day life
  • Relationships – ensuring your relationships are healthy and supportive

This article http://au.professionals.reachout.com/developing-a-self-care-plan provides a template you can download to get you started on your own individual self-care plan.  I think this is a valuable tool in setting down what your ideas are.  I would recommend that you read the article in full as it provides some examples for each of the 6 areas.

Once you have created your self-care plan, place it somewhere prominent so you see it every day.  The article also suggests revisiting at the end of each month to re-assess how you are progressing or to make any changes you feel necessary.

    I’ve never really given thought to a self care plan Sue bit it does make sense. I will read the article and may develop one myself. My fitness routine is my form of self care and my time to myself. Thanks for pointing this out #MLSTL Shared on SM

    I love the idea of an actual self care plan, Sue! It is such a critical part of our overall health. It makes sense that this type of plan should be unique for each of us, although I think the six areas should be included for everyone’s plan. Thanks for the insights! xo

    Seld care plan – that has so gone out the window of late! I got home from Sydney last night exhausted after having had no more than 5 hours sleep a night & no exercise to speak of for the last week, with a tight tummy after too much white bread at my parent’s house & too many grabbed or bulk banquet style party menus & too much red meat. It’s been a busy busy year workwise and after next Thursday I have 2 blissful weeks away from the day job. I need to think about myself & my own health (both physical and emotional).

    This is something I need to work on Sue as I’m struggling a bit at the moment. I’m unsure whether it’s because I’m faced with job-related decisions (well, whether to pursue a real full-time job, part-time stuff to pay the bills, or attempt doing some paid writing and deal with the resulting poverty somehow). And I think because they’re important (values-based) decisions I’m realising I’m not as resilient as I’d like to be. I’ve been eating and drinking unhealthily and just feeling really ‘off’.

    I’ve come to my mum’s for a few days to try to break the cycle (and downward spiral) but need to look at how I can better deal with this stuff.

    Such an important topic Sue. I found out the hard way six years ago how important self care and prioritising oneself is. I don’t have any kind of official ‘Self Care Plan’ in place but I have invested time in myself to understand myself and to recognise when I need to apply some self care. I also know what makes me feel better within myself. There are a variety of things and it’s a matter of choosing which one (or more) is needed at the time. There are some kinds of ‘self care’ that are a daily practice for me. Other’s just when needed. It’s not a selfish thing. It’s best for me and for everyone around me! LOL #TeamLovinLife

    Sue, thank you for this post and the link to a very practical and informative resource. Too often, I find myself reading about ‘self care’ being all about indulging ourselves with food, drink or other treats. It is so much more than that. Practicing self care in those more abstract intangible areas does require more effort but its value can end up being so much more than the relatively simple pleasure of savouring a glass of champagne. Not that bubbly is a bad thing or anything…

      I agree SSG I think self-care to me is also working to be healthier in mind, body and spirit. A yoga session gives me so much physically and mentally and I look at that as an example of self-care. Bubbly is good too as it always makes me feel like it is a party xx

    Hi Sue,
    This self-care thing is something that I am working on. It’s true, as women we are often in the role of taking care of others – and as a teacher that certainly extended to my career as well. I’m working of trying to relax more and take time to “smell the roses.” A plan for this appeals to my type A side.
    As an aside, I am flattered about your mention of doing a guest post…but if you emailed me it is lost in cyberspace…just let me know when you have a chance what you have in mind.

    HI, Sue – My New Year’s Resolutions tend to be hit and miss. In 2015, my resolution was to start a blog and in 2018 my resolution was to spend less time on the computer while increasing my physical activity. Both of those resolutions have become daily habits for me now. I love the idea of your Self-Care Plan. Much less hit and miss approach!
