I have some Irish blood in me from way back and although I’ve never visited Ireland I have always loved all things Irish. When I was younger, I learned Irish dancing and Irish music certainly gets the toes tapping and lifts the spirits. Ireland is definitely on our bucket list to visit, however, living in Australia it is on the other side of the world, so not a quick visit.
On St Patrick’s Day I’d like to share this traditional Irish blessing with you and some things I love about Ireland.
My favourite things from Ireland
Irish legends and mythology
St Patrick for ridding Ireland of snakes – although I’m sure he did more good works than that. Faeries, leprechauns, pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, the Shamrock or four leafed clover and the Blarney Stone. Ireland is full of myths and legends. You can read 10 ten stories and figures from Irish mythology here
I love all of Maeve Binchy books and my favourite of all time is The Evening Class. I wrote a review on that a little while ago so you can read about it here if you wish. Maeve’s books transport me to Ireland and Dublin and because most of her books interweave the lives of the same characters I feel I’ve come to know them as friends. To me, reading a Maeve Binchy book is like wrapping a comforter around me and feeling warm inside.
Who doesn’t feel good listening to some Irish music with a pint of guiness. River Dance brought the music and dance of Ireland to the wider audience so I found the final performance of Riverdance from youtube to share.
My favourite book
My all time favourite book about Ireland was introduced to me by my husband, over 20 years ago. The book is titled ‘Trinity’ and was written by Leon Uris. It is a story about the struggles of Ireland and centres around the main character Connor Larkin. There is also a sequel which would recommend call ‘Redemption’. When I’m bored with books I always come back to this book which combines history and fiction.
The Irish Accent
The lilting and melodic sound of the Irish accent is beautiful. I could sit and listen for hours. I also love their sayings.
