As part of my Positive Aging Series I believe we need to look at the importance of fashion in helping to create a positive image of ourselves.  Who better to ask than Jodie from Jodie’s Touch of Style?

Jodie loves fashion and has such a positive outlook on life that it definitely is contagious! Apart from Jodie and her gorgeous smile, showing that women of midlife can look and feel fabulous, she is also joined by her Mum and StepMum.  I am fortunate to have interviewed these classy ladies who are certainly Sizzling!  You can see these interviews later in the month on the blog so watch out for them.

Today, Jodie is discussing how what we wear can impact how we feel.  I know myself if I’m wearing my daggy track pants and slippers, I might be comfortable but I don’t feel like I’m Sizzling that is for sure.  In her post, Jodie shares 3 ideas with us on ways fashion can certainly help us to feel more positive about ourselves.  You can find the links to Jodie’s website and social media at the end of the post.

How Clothing Impacts How You Feel

Getting older is starting to be viewed as cool again. Of course that depends on which article you read and from which source! But the truth is, that aging happens to each and every one of us if we are lucky enough. We may moan and groan about the changes that each birthday brings, but in reality, nobody wants the alternative either!

So with that thought in mind, how do we embrace our age and love ourselves?

I know, many of us have wrestled with self-confidence issues at some point in our lives. And even though we may be older and wiser, those same doubts can pop up even now! And these issues happen with EVERY single person I know.

Can we ban this negativity from our thoughts for good?

It’s doubtful! But as silly as it sounds, dressing fabulously each and every day is a step in the right direction. Even though we all know that it’s the inside that really counts and we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover; it’s human nature to be swayed by the visual packaging. This is exactly why large companies spend millions of dollars on the presentation of their products!

Even if you are one of those people that tend to think of fashion and style as “fluff”, I would challenge you to prove it to yourself and others. How would you prove it, you ask? By dressing up each and every day for an entire month. Even if you aren’t going anywhere that day, I’d like you to take the time and put on an outfit that you might normally wear on a nice outing. And then evaluate how you felt each day! Did you feel any different? Did people treat you any differently or comment on your outfit?

Now you certainly could prove me wrong. You could do this experiment and feel no different. But I’m going to put my money on the outcome that you will feel better. The story that is so heartwarming to me was when one of my knitting friends was battling pancreatic cancer. She was going through all of the chemo treatments and had lost a bunch of weight. She usually was in her sweats and could care less about how she looked. And who could blame her? But one of her friends talked her into going shopping for some new, better fitting clothes. And do you know that she told me it made her feel 100% better every day! I wouldn’t have believed that clothes could affect you that much except she said they did!

And I’d like to clarify about dressing nice for each and every day. This does not need to be a dress or a skirt; but when choosing your outfits, consider these 3 factors that I think can play a huge role in looking nice.

One is the fit of your clothing items.

There is nothing like a well-fitting garment to make you feel better about the shape of your body. Many women often try to hide their body behind big and baggy items; however, this only serves to make someone look bigger and sloppy! And while getting alterations done on your pieces may be extra money, it is truly worth the cost!

The second factor that will increase your joy in your clothing is color.

There are many scientific studies that prove that certain colors affect us differently. And I bet if you look in your closet right now, you may see a trend about which colors you normally wear! Now all you need to do is find out if those colors are really fabulous for you! If they are, then wear them more. If they aren’t then let someone else have them!

And last but not least, it really is the extras that can upgrade your outfits.

Have you updated your shoes lately? Comfort and style is absolutely possible in the same shoe with many footwear companies nowadays. Do you add any accessories to your outfits? These small pieces of bling and sparkle can make even the dullest outfits look a little more special.

We all deserve to feel good about ourselves, and our clothing choices can go a long way in helping our outlook on life.

I believe that the color of what you wear is something that has the most influence in how you will feel that day and also how comfortable you feel in your clothes. The worst thing that you can do to your day is to wear something uncomfortable. Thanks for sharing Jodie!

Along with some nice fitting clothes — a decent haircut. I can’t believe what a difference it does make. Instead of just pulling my hair back in a scrunchie I make sure it looks attractive before leaving the house. I try to get dressed before I even sit at my computer — makes me feel more professional. I love your tips — I’ve been negligent in the past but no more. I’ll be following you.

I think we realize what a difference it makes when we have tried it both ways, Marisa!! Of course there are times, I’m in my pj’s until 10 am—eeek! But at least I do get dressed!!
      Thanks for your thoughts!

You know I love your blog Jodie – and your two Mum’s who help you each week. It’s so lovely to have some inspiration in what to wear and how to wear it – that doesn’t come from a 19 year old!
