We all have dreams but sometimes we might feel that life has passed us by and we are too old. However, my guest this week on the Over 50 & Thriving Series, lives by the mantra ‘I am never too old and it’s never too late’.
Apart from being the Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond Fashion Editor, Christine Blundell is also a friend of mine. Although I’ve only known her for a year, Christine has fulfilled her dream of becoming an Image Consultant and shares her story with us today.
Realising I am never too old and it’s never too late.
Do you have dreams and unfulfilled desires in your heart that you have put up on the shelf of Someday?
Something you always had a passion to pursue or somewhere you always dreamed of visiting, but because of life and commitments those dreams have become faded and dusty?
I was married at 19 and we were focused on setting up our home and wanting to pay off our home in those days our house cost the grand sum of $14,000!) Then along came the family and I was a stay at home mum to our 2 beautiful children and of course becoming involved in their school and sport life and also very involved in our Church, particularly in Women’s Ministry.
Over the years I always had a passion for colour and style and read and learned everything I could about them. I also became a Nutrimectics Consultant and still am after 25 years.
Due to bringing up our family and financial commitments, I was unable to do any official training as an Image Consultant.
I had been doing some modelling for a local Knitwit store and they invited me to be a model fora Colour Analysis and much to my shock discovered I had been wearing all the wrong colours!
As I began changing the colours I wore, people began commenting how lovely I looked and asked me to help them work out their best colours and so began my determination to become trained and I found an online course in America that was very low cost, but having completed the course and receiving certification, I realised that there was so much more for me to learn, but was it too late? Was I too old?
Over the years my self esteem had been chipped awayand I felt that my passion to see women become all that God created them to bewas going to remain unfulfilled.
Then much to my amazement, a local High School somehow got my name from somewhere and rang and invited me to take a class of Grade 9 girls on Colour and Body Image and with fear and trepidation I accepted, but wondered how they they would feel about a sixty something lady speaking to them about these things. Well it turned out I loved them and they loved me and I am now in my 3rd year of going to each Grade 9 twice a year!
Last year the amazing Image company I am with began online Image training at an amazingly low introductory price and deep down I felt this was my time, but the voices in me kept saying
“ you are past doing anything like that, you are too old, it’s too late and the course is too difficult “
and the old low self esteem kicked in again. After much wrestling with myself and lots of love and encouragement from my beautiful sister I signed up.
Well, it was a difficult course and at one stage I thought about giving up, but after 60 lessons, 14 assignments and 5 post course assessments- I graduated and became Certified.
The feeling of achievement was and still is wonderful. I finally realised that I AM NOT TOO OLD AND ITS NEVER TOO LATE! I am planning to complete another certified course next year.
Since completing the course I have been given the opportunity by my lovely and special friend Sue to be Fashion Editor for Sizzling Toward Sixty and Beyond and connecting with so many amazing women. I am so grateful.
I think that as the years go by, we learn wisdom from our life experiences and we have so much to offer each other and the younger women. More and more I am discovering women over 50 who are reinventing themselves and loving it! My best friend in her late fifties has left secular employment and enrolled in Bible College to study for a Bachelor of Divinity.
What is your unfulfilled dream?
Don’t pass on from this world with the music still inside you. Go for it!
