#JunkFreeInJune - 15 ways to remove 'junk' from your life

Are you joining me in the #JunkFreeInJune challenge? I’ve had a great response to the idea which tells me that many of us want to make changes in our lives to live healthier, with less junk food, less clutter in our minds and less clutter surrounding us. It is all about Taking Control Back of our lives.

To kick off the month I’m listing some ways you can remove the ‘junk’ from your life over the next 15 days. I will then follow up with the second 15 days for the month. Hopefully by the end of June we will have all developed better habits in our attitude to eating and health, what possessions we really want and generally take back control of our lives.

Remember #JunkFreeInJune is all about Taking Back Control of your life. It is about removing what is holding you back and embracing new habits to create the life you want.

Take control of:

  1. Your Inbox – How many emails and subscriptions do you receive that you just click on and delete without reading? I know I’m guilty of that. It is time to decide to unsubscribe from those emails that no longer bring value to your life.
  2. Your wardrobe – If you are like me to look in your wardrobe and there are items you haven’t worn for ages, if at all. Christine Blundell will be a guest this month sharing how we can take control of our wardrobe.
  3. Your pantry – I’m guilty of finding things tucked at the back of the pantry way over the used by date and probably multiplying! Take a look in your pantry and remove any out of date items and at the same time replace unhealthy options with healthier ones. Watch for Nancy Dobbins’ post next week as she shares how she and her husband have transformed their eating habits.
  4. Your bathroom – too many products? Yep, I’m guilty again! Remove what products are tucked away that you haven’t used or won’t be using in the future.
  5. Cut down on sugar intake – in a recent poll on the Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond Facebook Group 40% of participants wanted to cut down on their sugar intake.
  6. Kitchen Clutter – Do you have too many appliances on your benchtops taking up room? Do you have a drawer full of containers with half the lids missing? Time to clear the kitchen of clutter one drawer at a time.
  7. Your Mental Health – I’m no expert or professional but going for a walk, regular exercise, sleep and meditation all go a long way to improving our general mental health and wellbeing.
  8. Your Physical health – Regular exercise and a nutritious eating plan will help your body stay fit and healthy as you age. Are you getting enough exercise and nutrients in your diet?
  9. Your time – Place a value of your time rather than letting life take over. Schedule in ‘me time’ and also don’t be afraid to decline invitations if your schedule is heavy. It is okay to ‘say no’. Use your time wisely and for your benefit.
  10. Your eating – do you skip meals, especially breakfast? Is your diet full of processed foods rather than organic? Swap the processed foods for fresh and see the benefits in more energy, weight management and mental well being.
  11. Your weekend – even as a retiree I still consider the weekend as the end of the week. Making time on the weekend to connect with others or just have a ‘doona’ day is important for our wellbeing. Why not organise a weekend getaway to reconnect with yourself and your partner?
  12. Your snacking – use one day per week to plan and prepare healthy snacks and meals. Being prepared will help you overcome sugar laden snacks at the 3pm slump time.
  13. Your finances – is your budget in need of some CPR? Do you have enough to enjoy a comfortable retirement? Are there direct debits that you have forgotten about and need to cancel?
  14. Your social media – schedule one or two days per week to go Social Media free. Get out into nature or relax and enjoy a book. Don’t let social media rule your life – be selective.
  15. Take control of your body – STRETCH – start each morning with some stretches to improve flexibility and tone.

Well there it is, the first 15 ways we can take control of our lives and become #JunkFreeInJune. Next week I will complete the month with 15 additional ways you can clear the clutter.

    I need to clean out my wardrobe…in fact, that might just go on the list for next weekend. I did the pantry a couple of weekends ago so the wardrobe it is.

      Good for you Jo! One project at a time. As we have recently moved I decluttered everything before the move which was quite liberating. A tip though for the wardrobe… I was in a frenzy decluttering and now I’m struggling to find something to wear LOL:)

    I can really relate to so many of these. We’ve been on a massive cull at home and have been donating stuff and selling on Gumtree and FB marketplace – so liberating! Although I’m a big fan of the pyjama day at weekends, we try and get away for a weekend every or every other month – just the two of us. It’s a really good way to recharge and reset and it’s true what they say, a change really is as good as a rest!

    Such a great list, Sue! Several items jumped out at me…the unwanted emails and taking weekend time off in particular. I don’t have a lot of ‘household clutter’ because I recently moved and started over fresh. It’s actually pretty great because my home only includes what I actually use! I need to keep it that way now. πŸ™‚

      Thanks Candi! I think the emails are a huge problem for everyone so I’m trying to work on those daily. Like you we have just moved to a new home so have decluttered and only brought what we really needed. I’m hoping to keep my home this way so let’s see how I go πŸ™‚

    A great list Sue, and I’ve started with my emails. As you say so many times I don’t even open them to read so I’ve started on the unsubscribing! As we’re away now for the rest of the month I’ll look at the other areas when I get back!

      Hi Deb, my emails were out of control and I always baulked at unsubscribing because I didn’t want to offend anyone. I know how I feel when people unsubscribe. I soon changed my mindset and have been deleting and unsubscribing to emails that I just don’t even open. Doing it daily has really helped. Have a great holiday and hope to see you xx

    A great list, Sue! I am guilty of too much in my inbox and I try to read it all. I am with you on how exercise helps mental and physical health. I have recently read a few posts on the concept of Time, our precious limited resource. I need to pay attention to where I am spending my time.     what a great list. Im trying to implement these in my life. Currently going through my clothes. I volunteer at a op shop so its so easy to take in what I don’t need any more. Hard to stop bringing things home πŸ™‚

    Great post, Sue. This list got me to thinking. I have made some progress recently on several of these–my inbox, my wardrobe, and my bathroom. The things that jump out at me as needing some attention are cutting back on sugar and social media. Now, am I ready to take that step. Hmm… At least you got me thinking about it. #MLSTL

    Some great ideas there Sue. I already did my wardrobe when clothes started not fitting (up a size in some things now I can eat again)….and with the house moves we have done we have culled more than ever. I also did my art and craft area and donated all the extras to the art program at my cancer hospital Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

    That’s an amazing list of things to look into Sue! You’ve certainly put some thought into it and there’s no excuse for the rest of us now! I’m very glad that we’re not sentimental or into collecting lots of “stuff” – less to clear out and less to dust! There are areas in my head and my body that could do with a bit of de-junking still though, so I’ll be working on those this month.

      Hi Theresa I sometimes feel guilty about unsubscribing but honestly I have subscribe to so many things over the years that are no longer relevant. It is quite liberating to hit the unsubcribe button!

    I need to go through my closet, especially my shoes and get rid of a lot of the things I haven’t worn in a couple of years. I’ve also lost some weight and need to get rid of too big clothes so I don’t fit back into them!

      Hi Michele, I recently moved house so tried to declutter before the move. I did perhaps go a little overboard though and I certainly have just the basics! I have to go to a wedding in July and literally havenothing to wear as we don’t go to formal occasions these days. I’m sure you are feeling more energetic having lost some weight and yes you won’t need those bigger sizes any more.xx

    Before selling my house three years ago, I was a keeper of all things “just in case” and it was easy because it was a pretty big house. Three years and three moves later, I have pared so much down and it really is liberating and makes breathing so much easier. Some things have an interesting learning curve… most recently a Summer cold sent me to the pill box to see what was there… only to realize that my habit of buying big bottles because they are the best per item price meant that I had more to throw out now that they were expired as I rarely get sick! Save a few dollars today to throw it away when the expiry date passed!! I’m no longer buying things and I find it easier to cull now that I have practice!

    I use a program called unroll me in order to stay on top of my email. I get to decide what I want to stay in my inbox, what I want to unsubscribe from and also what I want to go onto a subscriber email. I get one email a day that includes an overview of all the emails that came in. I only have to open what looks interesting at that moment. It really does make me feel better while also allowing me to “keep” getting emails that I want to see once in a while.

    Ah yes, I think this might be my archilles heel. Shedding. I know I need to get rid of lots of stuff. Slow process but moving forward. Mind you, we eat very well and don’t do much in the way of processed food. Just all those other things ….

      Welcome back! How was the trip? We have recently moved as we had been living with my in-laws for the last 11 years caring for them. I had to declutter my MIL’s home as well as my own. It was a process I don’t want to repeat that is for sure! Eating I’m fine and like you, Christine don’t eat much processed foods. A little decluttering at a time is the way to go.

    Since leaving the States, years ago, we’ve cut out the processed food, though it’s been a challenge, in some places, with limited cookware. I’m happy to say we’ll be getting a long-term apartment rental in Republic of Georgia, that will make cooking and eating healthier a lot easier. We’ve made some other healthy changes a long the way, such as cutting back on carbs, and cutting our wine consumption in half, and drinking more water. Thanks for sharing these great reminders for a junk-free June.
