When I think of the word ‘Nourishment’ I immediately think of food; eating foods that provide nourishment and keep my body healthy.
The Oxford Dictionary suggests that Nourishment means:
‘The food necessary for growth, health, and good condition’
We nourish our bodies but we also need to provide nourishment for our minds and our soul to achieve total overall health and well-being.
Our bodies are like machines that need to be maintained. You maintain your vehicle so why not look after yourself? That means looking at what you eat and how it affects your body.
There is a lot of talk at the moment about Clean Eating and cutting out Sugar. As I have written before, my approach to diet is to try to eat healthy, unprocessed foods 80% of the time and allow myself ‘treats’ 20% of the time.
Clean Eating can simply be incorporating more vegetables into your diet, avoiding processed foods, drinking more water and reading labels – even though it says ‘Low Fat’ it usually contains a higher % of sugar. Some breakfast cereals are advertised as healthy but are full of sugar – Good old fashioned oats are still the best option for breakfast.

Look in your pantry – What can you remove this week to reduce your sugar intake and eat less processed foods.
Just like our bodies require food and exercise to keep us healthy, so too our mind needs a workout to keep it fit and healthy. Stress and anxiety can place heavy demands on our mental health and we find that sometimes our memory is impaired – ever walk into a room and forget what you went in for? Usually this is just part of a busy lifestyle but unfortunately for some it could mean something more sinister, such as early onset of Alzheimers, which needs to be checked out with your doctor.
I’ve previously written about 7 ways to Keep Your Mind Fit & Healthy (click here if you want to read it in detail).
- Puzzles – exercise your mind with puzzles and crosswords
- Exercise – reduces stress and provides a ‘workout high’
- Diet – are you getting enough of the Vitamin B group?
- Learn something new every day
- Sleep and Meditation
- Record your memories
What is one thing you can do today to exercise your mind?
Making time to nurture our soul and feel good is just as important as eating a healthy meal or exercising. This means taking time out for YOU!!! How often do you get caught up in life – being a partner, mother, daughter, friend, building your career – when do you have time for yourself?
In my post https://www.sizzlingtowardssixty.com.au/why-we-need-to-be-selfish-sometimes/ I talk about the importance of putting yourself first by scheduling some time each week just for you to do something that makes you happy. This may seem selfish but unless you take time to nurture yourself and feel good about yourself, how can you expect others to feel good about you.
Taking time out can just be taking time to reflect or daydream. It might be getting your hair or nails done, going for a walk, listening to music, reading a book or my all time favourite – luxuriating in a bubble bath. Let the worries of the day melt away and ENJOY THE MOMENT! You will feel so much better for it and ready to take on the challenges of life.
What can you do this week to provide nourishment for your Soul?
