My next guest in The Positive Aging Interviews series is Kathleen Aherne from The Blogger’s Lifestyle and Owner of Luvit Quality Products. Kathleen was one of the first bloggers I met when I started blogging 2.5 years ago and she was so warm and welcoming to me. I will never forget her generous support given to me in time and sharing of knowledge. She really helped met understand the world of blogging and how to connect with others. I recently became a co-host of The Blogger’s Pit Stop Link Party which Kathleen organises each week.
Kathleen is certainly Sizzling Beyond 60 and is a great example of positive aging. I just had to include her in my interview series and hope you enjoy meeting her.
It is a privilege to be a part of Sue’s Positive Aging Interview Series. Sue always provides an energizing outlook on aging for her readers. – Kathleen Aherne
1. What does the term positive aging mean to you?
I embrace positive aging because the opposite is a dead end street. Writing from the top end of ‘middle age,’ I am feeling healthier, happier, and fitter than I have ever been.
I could think that I have lived a good life, had children, done lots of things, travelled, etc. and just sit back reminiscing old stories. . .
Then I see wonderful people, some 20 years older than me, keeping fit, starting businesses, doing studies. They continue learning and inspiring others to live life for as long as they have breath.
There is a trap that says our productive years are over already, that is not positive aging. Thank you to all the mentors who show us by example that we can still dream, make goals and have a positive impact.
I went in search of some wise quotes to use about positive aging. There were so many good ones I decided to make a collage.
2. What are your tips for keeping fit and healthy as you age?
I am so excited where my fitness is at, and I keep pushing to improve. We don’t have the power to extend our days here on earth, but we can influence our quality of life. The benefits of keeping active are endless, and you sure don’t want to miss out on them.
Find some fitness motivation. Motivation is a powerful tool. Listen to Sue, she is a wonderful example, join her Facebook group to be encouraged to move. Tell that inhibiting inner voice you are not its slave. Don’t submit to negative thoughts.
Fitness is only one aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Another is what you eat. We can’t eat badly and expect good results. I love carbs, but those sneaky yummy things were killing me. My healthy tip is to do some up to date research, so much of what we have learned in the past is not helpful.
Mental and spiritual health also have a bearing on overall health. I have learned not to neglect these critical areas that have a huge influence on life and well-being.
3. What is one piece of advice you wish you had known when you were younger?
I wish I had known that the inner voice did not always reflect the truth, its influence was mostly negative and damaging.
4. What is your favourite fashion or beauty tip?
Take an honest look at yourself. Play to the strengths and assist the not so good bits. Don’t dress to look like a teenager and don’t dress to tradition according to your age.
Be your best self and dress how you are comfortable. When I say comfortable, I don’t mean an inhibited comfortable. Step outside the confining box and experiment, put a little glitz into your jewelry, wear stilettos for special occasions. Learn what colors do the most for you and ‘sizzle.’
5. What is your advice for those about to retire or who have retired to ensure they enjoy this special time of life?
By the time you reach the status of retirement you have lived a lot of life and had a myriad of experiences. Mixed into all the wonderful times will be many regrets that you cannot go back and change. There will be some unresolved misunderstandings, even some injustices.
To ensure that we enjoy this special time of life, don’t go back and relive the past in your mind, you can’t change it. Put it behind you, learn what you can from the experiences and leave the rest behind. When an injustice eats away at you, you are demonstrating that the person behind it still has the power to control your emotions.
Take that power from them! There is one sure way to neutralize it; forgive them. That does not make wrongs right, and it does not mean you now trust them. Forgiveness releases you from emotional bondage, and they no longer have power over you.
“Forgiveness doesn’t excuse their behaviour. It prevents their behaviour from destroying your heart.” Hemant Smarty
“When you forgive, you don’t change the past . . . you change the future.”
One last thing on this subject is that sometimes we have to learn to forgive ourselves.
Now enjoy your freedom and go and explore all those things you have wanted to but not previously had the time to. People at our age often find that they are quite creative and discover previously hidden talents. Start a new hobby, do some classes, start a business, write a book, the choice is yours. This is your time to shine and blossom.
6. What is your favourite way to relax?
Indoors: it would be challenging myself with computer games or making jewelry, enjoying photography, art or anything creative.
Outdoors: Is planning adventure hikes with my husband and challenging our fitness. A wonderful way to relax and unwind.
7. What was the last book you read?
I just finished reading the Bible cover to cover in a modern translation. Anyone wanting to bring the Scriptures to life at a more understandable level I would recommend the New Living Translation.
8. Your Blog is called, Luvit Quality Products, tell us how you came up with the name and a little about your blog?
This blog Luvit (pronounced love-it) was named by my husband, it commenced as a jewelry store in 2005. In 2017 it was transformed into a much wider niche of gifts. The rationale behind the new store is to provide quality low cost gifts at bargain basement prices. You do not have to be on a tight budget to use the store; however, I aim to provide gift buying relief for those who do struggle with their finances.
