Prioritize your time is this week’s tip in Self Care Sunday with Sue.  I’m sharing learnings from this week on why it is so important to let go of what doesn’t matter so we can enjoy what is important to us in life.

I’ve been feeling overwhelmed with all I have taken on in my life lately. I’m especially struggling with my Fitness Course to the point where I was almost going to give up. If you know me then you would understand that giving up is not really in my makeup but sometimes we have to just hoist the white flag and surrender.

As I was preparing to surrender, two emails popped into my Inbox. Both had significant messages and rather than deleting I took the time to read through. They were both so on point with how I’m feeling that I was inspired for this week’s tip for Self Care Sunday with Sue.

    Sue, being overly committed is a joy robber and there is no shame in letting go of things that don’t fit into your life. Your advice to prioritize is spot on!

    Hi, Sue – For me, the best-kept secret has been that we equally need to prioritize our time in retirement as we did when we were working. Seriously, who knew? Before I retired, I believed that I would have an endless blank canvas of time to accomplish everything that I wanted to (and more)! Immediately I discovered how false this impression had been. Your advice to prioritize what is important to us and let the other ‘stuff’ reduce, come later, or drop off is essential –, especially for new retirees. Thank you for sharing this.

      I hear you Donna and many of us feel the need to fill up our days because we fear that we will become old and bored. There is balance in life and retirement is the perfect time to exercise that. Have a lovely week and glad you enjoyed the post. xx

    Hi Sue – sending you a hug from WA and to reassure you that you can choose to push on, press pause, or just quit anything and everything in life. It seems like different seasons require different responses. What not working has taught me is that we need to embrace the things that bring us joy (or at least satisfaction) and let the rest take a back seat. Good luck with getting your priorities on point and heading off into the future with a smile and a fresh sense of purpose xx

    Sue, I used a variation of a time management tool awhile back. This tool has you create a chart of actual time spent versus your goals/vision. It requires you to either have a calendar to review or to keep track in a log of where your time is spent over the course of a week or two. It was eye opening. I was spending more time than I thought on FB and playing on-line games… time wasting. And it also made me realize I enjoyed the time I spent reading and commenting on blogs and it was aligned to my personal vision statement. I know that in the last 2-3 weeks I’ve felt a bit overwhelmed with the new house purchase and therefore consciously put off a few things I said I would do this fall. They might never get back on the list, but if they are important enough, they will.

    Sometimes I take on more to-do’s than are really linked to my vision… just because they sounded interesting. I also need to learn to let go of things that spiral out of control on time-sucking as well! Just because I started it does not mean I need to finish it. It’s not quitting… it’s resetting priorities!

      Your last paragraph is exactly how I am, Pat and can be quite detrimental to our well being can’t it? I’m getting better and feel much more on top of my priorities at last. I hope your move goes well and just remember to take time to breathe. xx

    Hi Sue,
    I’ve been MIA…traveling to FL, visiting, exploring. Time to get back on track…
    Yes to this idea. I’m easily overwhelmed with “tasks to be done” and have just now started to work on prioritizing what is “essential to do vs want to do vs it would be nice to do”.
    Still working, but I am getting better as taking a pass on things when that feeling starts welling up and I feel like there is “so much to do, so little time.”

There is time for everything but not all at once and I’m getting much better at doing what I want or need to do rather than getting myself into situations where I don’t really want to do something but commit anyway. xx

    Hi Sue – Time is our precious and limited resource so yes, prioritize on what brings us joy and focus our time on that. Be kind to yourself and if you need to re-focus and reset your priorities, just do it. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of confidence and wisdom to do what’s right. #MLSTL

    Thank you Sue. Both of those quotes really put things into perspective. Sometimes it’s hard to let things go, but if you realize that everything is a trade off, by eliminating one thing you are able to put more time and energy into something else, it makes it a little easier. #MLSTL

    Sue, this post resonated with myself and I must admit I also tend to say “YES” I can do that, especially with volunteering work though I did cancel one event. I don’t enjoy cancelling a commitment. It was a lesson to remember to count to 10 before committing my time. I am enjoying getting more involved with our local community. Just have to remind myself that I have other things and people to enjoy.

    Hi Sue – some great quotes and points as outlined in your video. It’s very true that if you say “you don’t have time” … it really does mean that it’s not that important to you because if it were, you’d find the time. I also like the quote saying that what we focus on grows. Both these things resinate for me and are a good reminder to take a good look at how I’m spending my days and perhaps reprioritise how I spend my time. BTW – good luck with your fitness studies. I’m sure you’ll know what’s right for you – to lighten the light elsewhere and push on or to decide it’s not for you and let it go. Either way you’re no less a person.     One BIG lesson I have learned in the past couple of years (post cancer diagnosis) is that when my time is for me to choose what to do, I grab it with both hands. That said, I also have a loose routine each day to ensure I am doing (being!) something that refreshes and renews me (solo coffee, browse at shops and write in my journal) helps others (social networks and blogging) and with my husband. We connect at meal times and through the day and have a date morning. It was very hard for me, a teacher with timetables, to begin her life as a retiree with NO planning which ends up being boring and wasteful. My ‘loose’ timetable is not a must but a suggestion. I also operate now on the philosophy that what was right for today may not fit tomorrow’s needs. Thank you for linking up for Life This Week.     Hi Sue I agree with you that prioritising is so important. We have to do what is right for us, not what somebody wants us to do. I could never say no when I was younger or if I did I felt the need to give an excuse. Today I can easily say no and not give a reason. If the other person doesn’t like it, it’s their problem, not mine. May seem harsh but it can be done with kindness.

    Hi Sue, A number of your recent posts and especially #3 are reminding me of Stephen Covey, “sharpening the saw” in our personal lives. I also LOVE Marc and Angel. Their words often help me on a daily basis manage life’s challenges. You are part of this category, too, Sue. You just reminded me of something I recently heard: paraphrasing – instead of ticking things off a list, remove them entirely from the list. Always great posts, Sue! (by the way, my comments not showing up on your site via Safari, so switched to Firefox) Could be my site acting up?
