Regain your fitness & healthy lifestyle after a vacation or illness

Do you find it hard to get back on track with fitness and exercising after a long vacation?

Maybe you have been ill and not able to exercise regularly or life has been hectic and you have just lost your mojo in regards to health and fitness. 

It happens to us all but you can get back on track.

I’ve just returned today from 4.5 weeks exploring Spain and Italy with my darling husband, Mike.  We had a fabulous time which also included a 7 day cruise around France, Italy, Malta and Sicily.  Perhaps you saw some of my photos which I shared on Instagram and Facebook?

If you are a regular reader you will know that I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle which includes eating a well balanced diet and exercising at least 4 times per week.

However, after enjoying the delicious cuisine, wine and gelato, I’ve returned home carrying a couple of kilos more than usual – even though we did plenty of walking it isn’t the same as working out.

To me there is no point taking a vacation or travelling and exploring other cultures if you aren’t going to relax and enjoy the food as well as the ‘sights’.

I’ve returned feeling wonderful and mentally motivated so starting today I’m back into a new routine and looking forward to losing those unwanted kilos and feeling back to my normal fitness levels.

So how will I regain my fitness and healthy lifestyle after my vacation?

1. Making healthier food choices

After eating pasta, gelato and pizza and drinking too much sangria it is time for more salads, vegetables and smaller portions of meat, chicken and fish.  I won’t be dieting just cutting back on the ‘ daily treats’ for a while.

2. Mixing up my Work Outs

Apart from my two runs a week with my Saturday Sisters, I will be incorporating some yoga, cardio and light weights.  I’ve mentioned before the app Yoga Studio which I just love but today I also found an App on the Microsoft Store called ‘Daily Workouts’.  This App is FREE and has workout routines abs, legs, pilates, butt and weights.

Keeping variety helps maintain motivation.

3. Maintaining Mental Well-Being

This month on the blog I’ve been focusing on ‘Gratitude’ which is an important factor in having a positive mental attitude to life. I want to ensure that I look after my mental well-being by taking time out each day for ‘quiet time’ to reflect, dream and to think of 3 things I’m grateful for each day.

Keeping balance in life ensures good health and well-being in mind, body and soul which reduces stress and anxiety.

Looking after yourself by eating healthier and exercising regularly is also a great way to reduce the Post Holiday Blues.

    Welcome home Sue! When I first get back after a trip where I’ve eaten more rich food, drink, and dessert than usual, it’s almost a relief to get back to a healthier diet. It’s a little more difficult for me to get up to speed on the intensity of my workouts. It sounds like you’ve got it under control though.

    Travel is not always kind to diet and fitness, you bring up great points. Happy you are back and loved seeing your photos on your sites!

      I know Terri but I took the attitude that I was there to fully immerse myself in the culture and food. Now I’m back I can get back into my routine. Glad you loved the photos but some of them don’t do the views justice.

      Thanks Donna. It is hard to give up all that beautiful food and wine but I need to feel comfortable in my own skin again. I also need to get used to cooking as we haven’t made a meal for over a month!

    You looked like you had a great trip and it’s good you walked a lot to keep some fitness up.

    I’ve struggled with this in past… stressing about losing fitness more than regaining it, bizarrely.

    I’m about to restart pilates and hate that I’m a beginner again after so many years of not doing any, but need to be gentle with myself!

      Good attitude about being gentle with yourself Deb. I usually go back into exercise full bore and then pay for it the next few days LOL:) We had a wonderful time and now to plan the next one!

    It’s taken us a couple of weeks since we got back (not helped by cold wet weather in Victoria) but we are rebuilding our walking and like you getting back to salads and lean protein. Cava sangria is a bit tempting though 😉

    I needed this advice around 5 months ago Sue! Although I didn’t put on too much weight on my holiday I did feel very sluggish for weeks afterwards. You do get out of your normal healthy routine and it’s hard to get back on track. I eventually started a diet and exercise program in July and so far have had some good results. I’m hoping there will be a little less of me by Christmas. #TeamLovinLife

    Thankfully I’ve never been seriously ill but I have had more than a few holidays. The big thing for me when I come back is the not drinking alcohol because I always over indulge on holiday.

    I’m sure that only you would notice those couple of extra kilo’s Sue and I’m equally sure that you will be rid of them soon enough. I’m so happy you had a wonderful holiday and did enjoy the photo’s you shared while away! Glad you’re home safely! I just returned to Pilates this morning after a few weeks of no exercise due to being sick with a virus and of course Dad being ill (and still is). I really felt it today and I loved it. I think I might be a bit sore tomorrow morning! #TeamLovinLife

      Oh I know Min but it is more about feeling a little uncomfortable more than the weight. I find I only need a kilo or two extra and I feel ‘blah’. My friends have just started pilates and want me to go so I’m putting that on the list. I’m sore after a workout earlier this week so I’m doing some yoga and a run with the Saturday Sisters tomorrow and that is a good start. I do hope your Dad improves so sending you my good wishes and healing thoughts. xx

    Welcome home Sue! Oh I heart your dilemma – and agree, what’s the point of experiencing different cultures and countries without tasting the food. In my case it’s generally ALL of the food. On the cruise we managed to walk lots and go to the gym nearly everyday, and after a week I was super conscious of portion control. I bet you’ll soon be back to your peak fitness and ideal weight – by the way thanks for the heads-up on that workout app – downloading it as I write.

      Thanks Jo! I certainly went with the attitude of enjoying all the experiences including all the food and wine and of course those custard tarts and filled croissants! On the cruise I’m like you and try to get to the gym daily but the rest of the month was just walking and discovering and eating! I tried that app and it is pretty hard going but I really enjoyed it.     I am working on becoming more active. I have severe arthritis in both of my knees and hips, so mobility is an issue. I have started to hula hoop and I am about to take up Pickleball. Both of these activities are not too hard for my joints, so I’m hopeful that a more active lifestyle is in my near future. I’m not waiting till the New Year, I’m starting now.

    Great tips. I finally got back to the gym today after life stresses saw me ditch it for a few weeks. I’m now back to healthy eating and exercise.

    I am pretty into breaking it down into simple steps. Water, movement and getting good food into the house.

      Hi Elise, I find it hard to come home and start cooking again! LOL:) After being waited on for the holiday you certainly come back to earth with a thud. x
