Another New Year has arrived and that means new beginnings. I gave up making New Year Resolutions a couple of years ago for several reasons, which you can read about here.  Instead, I started to concentrate on a life plan – something that would be consistent.  We all start off with NY resolutions with great gusto only to find that by end of January (if we are really trying) our resolve has left and we fall back into back habits.

This year, my word is THRIVE and through my personal experience and those of my guest writers in the Over 50 & Thriving Series, I hope to encourage and inspire you to THRIVE in your own life.

One of the most important parts of thriving is to ensure that our health and well being are in tip top shape.  This year, I’m joining with Natalie from Natalie The ExplorerLeslie from Once Upon A Time, Happily Ever After, for Wellness Wednesdays, a monthly link up dedicated to health and wellness.   Leslie has chosen ‘Peace’ for her focus and you can read here her thoughts on Setting Her Wellness Goals for 2018

So let’s get started with some goals for 2018!  Not sure where to begin?

Thriving through good health and wellbeing

Being healthy means not just health in body but also mind and spirit.  So I’d like to share some ideas to get you started on thriving through good health and wellbeing.

Consistency is the key

It doesn’t matter how often you want to exercise (although 4-5 times per week, for 30 minutes is optimal), how much weight you would like to lose or whether you want to have less stress or anxiety in your life, CONSISTENCY is the key.  Find something you enjoy – just move! You need to make being healthy a lifestyle not just a quick fix diet or exercise program that promises miracles but delivers short term results.

Make a plan

To be consistent you need to make a plan and STICK TO IT!  I’m old fashioned and like to write things down so I make a plan of my weekly exercise program and put it on the fridge so I can tick off when I’ve done it.

If you are wanting to lose weight, don’t starve yourself!  Cut out the ‘treats’ and make healthier food choices.  You might like to read my article Diet is a Dirty Word – Why Fad Diets don’t work long term.  Make sure your pantry and fridge are stocked with good, nutritious food and you set up some prep time each week.  This will avoid falling down and grabbing an unhealthy snack or meal because you weren’t prepared with a healthy option.

Treat yourself to some work out gear

Recently, I was sent some active wear from HydroChic to try.  It is amazing how motivated you feel just putting on some active wear.  You just want to workout and it makes you feel good.  I love this outfit because it is so colourful and I plan to use it in my fun runs this year – You will certainly see me coming!  You can read more about the benefits of HydroChic here and I plan to write a review in the next few weeks.

Thriving through good health and wellbeing

Investing in good workout gear and especially shoes if you plan to run or walk, is important to provide comfort and give yourself a boost.  Good shoes also help prevent injury.

So what is my plan for 2018?

Exercise – 4 -5 times per week including two runs with my Saturday Sisters (the ladies I run with), yoga, pilates and light weight training.

Choose healthier eating options –  I want to be alcohol free Monday to Friday and choose to healthier food options.  I will indulge a little on the weekends but not to undo all the good work for the week.  We have to treat ourselves though otherwise life would be dull.  Of course, you could treat yourself with a new outfit, a massage or facial as an alternative. They sound like a good idea to me!

Mental Health – return to my daily morning ritual which I let go towards the second half of last year.  Taking a few moments each morning to reflect and give thanks plus just enjoy clearing my mind before the day takes over.

Spiritual Health – enjoying my family and friends and doing more to bring happiness and joy to my life.  That includes giving back to others which can be so rewarding.

    Hi, Sue – I like your focus on ‘thriving’ and your ‘good health and wellness’ plan. I think that you could replace the word ‘diet’ with ‘healthy eating’.

      I’ve taken your advice Donna and changed the word ‘Diet’. I don’t like that word because it conjures up ideas of ‘crash dieting’ ‘starving ourselves’ for short term gains when really it should be a lifestyle change. Thanks for the comment and have a beautiful day. xx

    I too like the sensible approach you talk about here and agree consistency is vital. I am aiming at at least 30 minutes exercise each day, eating healthily and looking after myself more this year. My focus is to look ar relationships as well as other areas. I like the idea of massages and other things can be classed as treats instead of food. I use these all the time to help me motivated.

      Hi Deb! I have learnt over the years that taking a sensible approach is the best way to maintain an healthy lifestyle. It really is just about making being healthy a habit and enjoying the exercise that you do. Having treats other than food is good as well.     I’m continuing this year with my daily walks, cutting back on the booze & being more mindful of portion sizes. I’m also bringing back 2 activities that I used to do to keep my wonky back straight which I haven’t done in way too many years. One I love but was unable to do for years due to a shoulder injury – swimming – and one I’ve never enjoyed, but that I know helps keep me upright – resistance training. Even though I’m putting the focus on the activities I enjoy, I’m doing something I don’t because it’s necessary. Sigh. My focus is heart – heart health, healing heart – and the things that make my heart sing.

    Great tips, Sue, particularly that we all need a little break from our efforts in order to ensure we continue them.

    I have a Saturday all-gals running group also, I joked that we are like the island of misfit toys from the holiday classics ‘Rudolph.’ All experienced runners, we are all in our 50’s, and our bodies are letting us know that big time. Still, so much fun to run, sometimes hobble, together. And always, always beats sitting on the sofa vegging our on TV. ?

    Funny how we have similar things on our lists. I started my list by saying I wanted to swim so many times a week, run so many times a week, lift weight 2X, hike 1X. And then decide that it was better to be more general. Like you are with your fitness activities.

    When my girls were growing up, it seemed we equated reward with food. So good grades meant we went out to dinner. One daughter made the cheer squad, the other was the editor of the yearbook…and we celebrated with food. Until my youngest one pointed that very thing out. And then I tried to find other types of rewards. Massages and facials, pedis and manis work very well.

    Also cutting back on my alcohol. Not that I drink much at all. But it is easy to reward myself or soothe myself with a glass of wine. Need to switch that mindset.

    Anxious to hear more as you continue to THRIVE in 2018.

      Well we are related Leslie so I’m not surprised our lists are similar LOL:) I agree we were always taught to equate treats with food rather than alternatives to be kind to ourselves. I don’t drink much either but I just had too many bubbles over the festive season and wanted to take a breat for a while. Here’s to thriving in 2018! xx

    Great tips for getting started! Since I can’t fit into a lot of my workout clothes, I think I need to take that piece of advice for sure! 😉

    I love your daily ritual! I have gotten into a terrible habit of sleeping until our daughter gets up, and then I start my day scattered and frazzled and with the lovely sounds of The Wiggles instead of silence and reflection. Perhaps it’s time to start setting an alarm again to have a little morning mom time!

      Hi Amber, yes morning time is my best time. Of course I don’t have young children to look after but it is amazing how on top of the day you feel when you start the day well. Even half an hour makes such a difference.

    You keep me motivated towards fighting the inevitable Midlife midline spread Sue! As I mentioned, I bought a fitness tracker because I needed to be “buzzed” and reminded when I’ve been sitting too long and it has the added bonus of making me realize I wasn’t doing anywhere near enough steps each day. I’m also looking at my eating habits more this year – looking at ways to eat more “intentionally” and snacking less etc. Hopefully 2018 will be the year I turn the Midlife midline creep back in its tracks!

    I like the thoughts behind ditching the New Year resolutions, Sue. Your new active gear will be a show stopper as all that color flashes by as you run. I agree the gear puts you in the mood for exercise.
