Creating my Cruise Clothing Capsule with My Private Stylist

September 23, 2018
Packing ideas from my wardrobe for a 14 day cruise

In her last post, Christine Blundell, Fashion Editor for Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond, provided 8 tips to making packing for your vacation a breeze.

Taking an overseas vacation can be expensive and as most of us are on a budget we don’t necessarily want to buy a whole new wardrobe for our trip. In this post, I’ve asked Christine to use her styling experience and put together some ideas using my own clothes.

Creating my Cruise Clothing Capsule with My Private Stylist

We are going to take the core wardrobe garments and work a mix and match travel wardrobe for Sue for her 2 week cruise, using only 22 garments.  I would also recommend adding a scarf to add extra interest and warmth if needed and a light rainproof jacket.

In addition to Sue’s Travel Wardrobe I would recommend a Scarf for warmth if needed and to add extra interest to her garments, also a lightweight rain jacket and of course, a hat for sun protection.

I love the idea of capsule wardrobes and most of the clothes in my closet are (consciously or not) travel-friendly and mix & matchable. Never have gone on a cruise – I understand you need some dressier clothes. When I go to the Barbados for 2 weeks, I only take a carry-on bag (I do a lot of hand-washing in my hotel room). My snorkel and mask, bathing suits (at least 2) and cover-up take up most of the room in the bag…hehehe!
Great post! Enjoy your cruise, Sue! You’ll look fabulous.

Hi Deb, I normally just take casual clothes on a cruise as we don’t bother with the formal nights. We usually have to fly to our cruise departure and taking formal wear is just an added weight we don’t need. I love your idea of 2 weeks in Barbados it sounds so relaxing. Thank you for your lovely words and I’ll be taking a break from the blog but will return with stories I’m sure. xx

    • Reply Christine September 26, 2018 at 09:50

Hi Deb. Two weeks in Barbados- lovely! Hand washing on holiday is a necessity! You are doing great to only take carryon. Christine x

Hi, Sue and Christine – Your capsule wardrobe looks great, It has also given me some ideas for my own packing that I need to do shortly. Have an awesome trip. Keep us posted with lots of photos!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 26, 2018 at 07:52

Thanks Donna! I might not take them all but Christine certainly gave me some good ideas of combinations I would never have thought of. Where are you going? xx

    • Reply Christine September 26, 2018 at 09:53

Hi Donna, it’s amazing how many combinations we can come up with if we shop in our wardrobe! Glad you like the capsules I put together for Sue. Christine x

Well you’re certainly on trend and packing light Sue! It’s amazing how many outfits you can achieve with so few basic items. I’m looking forward to seeing you in some of them when your holiday snaps pop up on FB or on subsequent blog posts. Nearly time for us to be saying Bon Voyage!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 26, 2018 at 07:53

Aren’t I always on trend, Leanne even when I don’t know I am? LOL:) Getting excited now but no blogging for two weeks so the posts will have to wait 🙂

Well, my stylish friend – the countdown to the cruise is well and truly underway – I’ll miss you next week on #MLSTL but I’ll do my best to hold the fort! Another great party this week and I’ve shared your post on my SM xx

Yes not long now, Leanne and I’m starting to get excited. Taking a break from blogging for a couple of weeks is scary but a relief at the same time. I’ll miss you too but know that #MLSTL is in very capable hands. We make a great team! xx

Hi Leanne, yes Sue is definitely always on trend! She has a natural sense of style. Will be interesting to see how many of my combinations she wears. Christine x

What fun it is to create a wardrobe around a specific event! I love your selections as well as how they were presented on the blog. so we could get a visual of how the separates can be paired with the core pieces.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 26, 2018 at 07:54

It is fun Candi, and Christine gave me some ideas I hadn’t thought of. Thanks for the comment on the presentation, Christine put it together and I agree showing the ways we can add to the core pieces was a great idea. x

HI Candi. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the post and the visuals, it always helps to be able to see what is being explained. Thank you for your lovely words. Christine x

The perfect wardrobe for ship and shore! I love cruising and often have a tough time keeping my suitcase light. This is a great plan.

Thanks Natalie, I will have to take a leaf from you blog and write a couple of posts on my return. xx

  • Reply Agnes Knowles September 26, 2018 at 07:28

Wow! All the pieces look so “cruise”-ish, but they all work in day-to-day life as well. I’m so impressed as I think I was out eating chocolate when the style genes were being dispensed.
    Have a fabulous time!!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 26, 2018 at 07:35

Thanks Agnes, I didn’t realise I had so many options in my wardrobe! I’m getting excited now. I’ll be taking a break from blogging for two weeks and will return with stories of my trip. Have a great week! xx

    • Reply Christine September 26, 2018 at 12:20

Hi Agnes. Sometimes we just need some fresh eyes to look at our wardrobe to help us along! Christine x

  • Reply Jennifer September 26, 2018 at 07:30

I guess you’re taking a cruise with formal dining. To me, that’s too much clothing especially when you have a concierge who is falling all over you to try to do things, like take your clothes to the laundry. My husband and I vacation in timeshares so we have laundry access at all times in order to pack lighter. #MLSTL

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 26, 2018 at 07:34

No I don’t take formal wear Jennifer but Christine just gave me an idea of what I could take. We are pretty laid back when we go cruising but I know some women like to pack for all occasions. x

    • Reply Christine September 26, 2018 at 12:23

Hi Jennifer, Sue may not take all the items I suggested but it gives her options and shows how we can create mix and match capsules with what we have. Christine x

  • Reply Min @ Write of the Middle September 26, 2018 at 08:21

Fantastic! I love every piece in that collection. Very stylish, comfortable and practical and I love the colour choices too! Well done to both Christine and yourself! How exciting to have a cruise to look forward to Sue! 🙂 xo

Thanks Min! Christine certainly gave me enough ideas and some I hadn’t even thought of putting together. Getting excited now!

Your capsule wardrobe looks great Sue and takes the worry out of what to wear. I love that your pieces all mix and match. This is definitely not the case with my wardrobe! Enjoy the cruise. Looking forward to the photos. #MLSTL Will share on SM

I am not sure what month you are cruising but we went in Aug. It was the best cruise we ever took it is so beautiful. I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe but always end up overpacking.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 27, 2018 at 08:44

Hi Victoria, we have been on a number of cruises and just love it. This time it is around Japan and we leave next Tuesday 2nd October. It is getting exciting now. xx

  • Reply Christie Hawkes September 26, 2018 at 21:49

It’s amazing what you can do with a few select pieces, if you know how to put them together. You are going to look great with these, have plenty of variety, and not be bogged down with suitcases. When and where are you cruising? I’m so excited for you! #MLSTL

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 27, 2018 at 08:41

I know Chrisitie, Christine gave me quite a few ideas I hadn’t thought of. We are flying to Japan on Tuesday for a 14 day cruise around Japan. We are getting excited now and I’m taking a break from the blog while I’m away xx

What great pieces for a cruise.

  • Reply Janis @ RetirementallyChallenged September 27, 2018 at 07:56

I’ve created a capsule wardrobe for our travels based on navy, gray, and raspberry/purple. It has worked very well for me… except that I’ve noticed that in many of the pictures of me taken while we are traveling to various locations, I’m wearing the same or similar clothes! I guess I need to go shopping 🙂

    • Reply Sue Loncaric September 27, 2018 at 08:40

Hi Janis, I know what you mean about the photos. Maybe you just need a couple of capsules and then choose between them. Any excuse for shopping! x

  • Reply Trisha Faye September 27, 2018 at 10:12

There’s some delightful pieces in here that I’d love to have!
