4 Reasons Why You Need to Keep Hydrated Summer or Winter

April 30, 2015

Sizzling Towards Sixty(1)We all know we need to drink water and keep hydrated in summer.  We sweat more in the heat and are probably more active.  As It is starts to get chilly and the cooler mornings are telling us winter is on its way, we tend to forget to keep up our water intake.

We start going through our wardrobes and finding our winter woollies to keep us warm. Although it is cold we need to remember that keeping hydrated is just as important in winter as it is in summer.

Dehydration can have an adverse affect on your body so keeping hydrated summer and winter is a must.

How do I know if I’m dehydrated?

Symptoms of dehydration usually include:-

  • Dryness of mouth
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Light headedness
  • Urine is not clear
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Fatigue

Here 4 Reasons why you need to keep Hydrated Summer and Winter

1. Exercising

Because we aren’t feeling hot we forget to drink our daily recommended intake of water. If you have the same exercise regime in Winter and Summer you will also need the same hydration regime. In the cooler weather the air is drier making your lungs work harder. The harder your body works, the more you need to drink.

2. Staying indoors

Working in warm air conditioning or in a heated home can dehydrate your skin. Your skin becomes dry and feeling tight.  Water plumps up the skin and moisturizes from the inside.

3. Alcohol

Alcohol can dehydrate you so try drinking a glass of water in between.

4. Toxins

Water helps to flush out the toxins making you feel more energetic and healthier.  Your skin will look clearer and glowing and that’s a good thing!

How to keep hydrated?

  • Drink before you feel thirsty.  The old adage of 8 glasses a day can vary from person to person, how active you are, whether you are male or female.  However if you aim for 1.5 -2 litres per day this should be a good start.
  • Carry a bottle of water with you everywhere – buy a large, brightly coloured drink bottle and make it as important to take with you as your mobile phone.
  • Put a reminder alarm on if you need to remember to drink
  • Check your urine – if it is clear then you are hydrated if there is a yellow colour or bright yellow then you definitely need to drink more water.

So how much water do you drink each day?  Think about it!

This makes me laugh since on this side we’re just getting into the hotter season. But yes, being hydrated is so important. The color of urine is a good check but also if you haven’t felt the need to go to the bathroom in a few hours, that’s a sign too.

I know it is difficult when you have readers all over the world. You will really need to hydrate now that the warmer weather is coming!

It can be easy to underestimate the value of water and all its many benefits to our health, fitness and beauty. Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Shellie thank you for the comment. Yes especially in winter it is easy to forget as you don’t feel as thirsty.

I have to admit that while I am home, I drink much less than usual. There are days when I do not reach my minimum of 2 liters. Shame on me.
But hydration is key to health all year around.

Yes I’m like that! So I carry a water bottle with me everywhere – I learnt that from my daughter.

Very good info! In the colder months it is hard to drink as much! Good timing as the weather in the states starts getting hot!!

    • Reply sue May 9, 2015 at 07:45

Yes, I’m guilty of not drinking enough in the colder months as you don’t feel as thirsty. You will need to drink plenty now summer is coming in your part of the world

Good advice… it can be so hard to stay hydrated, which is actually rather ridiculous! I mean all we have to do is drink water! but I have to remind myself every day to do it! Thank you for a great post. 🙂

Thanks Gentle Joy! Yes I carry a water bottle with me everywhere. Glad you enjoyed the post.

I used to work in a lymphedema clinic. A lot of people don’t realize the best way to keep swelling down is to drink a lot of water. I could always tell which patients were drinking their water and who wasn’t after I took measurements. I felt like a psychic, and my ‘guesses’ were taken like I was psychic, too. It got people to drink more since, with the measurements, they could see very concrete, objective results.

Thanks for your comment Kim. Perhaps you really are psychic!

Staying hydrated is so important and helps with so many important functions in the body. I carry water everywhere I go. What helps me drink enough at home is a glass with a straw, otherwise I am like Debbie and don’t get enough water when I am home.

    • Reply sue May 16, 2015 at 07:02

HI Charissa, I think we are all guilty of not drinking as much at home as we get caught up in other things. Thanks for commenting and have a lovely weekend.
